    1. "Bye!" When you'll be back quickly

    2. ""Bye Bye!" When you're speaking to a child.

    3. "Goodbye" When you're about to execute an MI6 agent caught in your mountain hideout

Bye - when you expect to see somebody again rather soon
Goodbye - when do not expect to see somebody again soon, if ever.

That's the way I use those words anyway. Like in portuguese, Tchau for bye and Adeus for goodbye, farewell, so long etc.

So is there a good time for you and your 6 siblings to sing "So long, farewell, auf Wiedersehen, good night, I hate to go and leave this pretty sight" in the modern age?

The word bye is also used in a sporting context where a participant advances to the next round of a competition without competing.
