dreambox 800se: newest version of the dm800, single tuner (satellite), enigma 2 linux operating system allowing use of plugins for electronic program guide etc. can run softcams which allow you use your paid subscrption cards in the box. can use usb tuner for rte dtt signals with the right drivers. middle priced of the 3 boxes listed and lots of software support.

vu duo: released a couple of years ago, 2 tuners (satellite) so can record 1 channel, watch another. uses enigma 2 as well so same plugins as dm800 above. can run softcams. can use the usb dtt tuner with right drivers. highest priced of the 3, good software support.

openbox: cheapest of the 3 boxes. not running enigma 2 so more limited with plugins etc. can run a softcam but not as a server. software updates come from the manufacturer so you are relying on them rather than the programming community which support the boxes above. probably ok as a second box.

in order of preference for me:
    1. vu duo
    2. dm 800se
    3. openbox

I have had them all and to me the Vu is the best box there is. Funny, that only 4-5 years ago DM was king and nobody envisaged their demise (not that that is happening). I have a few original Vu boxes and I am amazed and their power and stability. Vu FTW!

Of the 3 the Openbox only has Now and Next as an EPG ,the other 2 have a 7 day guide .
GUI on an Openbox is very basic .
Once you use an Enigma 2 receiver you will never want to use an Openbox again .

If you're looking at the DM and Openbox then you might consider the Vu Solo as it's a single tuner box and a lot cheaper than the Duo - they can be had for less than £200

i want to be able to record on one channel and watch a different channel....so it would have to be a duo/triple box ...

Check out the new Solo2 then. It's got everything the Duo has, but with a modern processor and more RAM.

It has 2 built-in tuners, and can do 1080p. It's not hugely more expensive than a Duo.

Also consider the new Amiko Alien 2 triple tuner.

If c/s ever stops at least this box will still do Freesat and Saorview.

Given that most new TV's can take VGA / DVI (HDMI) input , how do they compare to a dedicated PC with one or more tuner cards ?

All depends on your image to mount the hard drive first.. Look for device manager..
