The Mrs. hands in her company car at the end of the month and now has to buy her own. Probably up to 15/20k per year. Any suggestions or recommendations welcome. It would be the second car. Other family car is 2010 VW passat.

    Hatchback, saloon?

You're fierce sparse with details :P

    Petrol/diesel
    Engine size - min/max
    Year
    Hatchback, coupe, saloon
    Brand
    Tax bracket
    Pre 2008/post 2008

Personally, I would be looking at the likes of a Hyundai i30 or Kia C'eed since you already have a saloon.

Fair point. I'd say although its not my choice, something in the mid range, as new as possible, post 2008.

He said 15/20k. That's not quite worth the diesel premium is it?

Hardly! IMO, if its going to be the second car you might as well get a hatchback. A golf or scirocco.

No. but it might on terms of the car tax and emmissions. The Honda used to cover the country but the new job will entail only about 20km per day driving mostly, except for other stuff. I would imagine that a smaller car would do the job even though I'll miss the acceleration and drive of the Honda myself. How far would 10k get you say in terms of a Golf for example?

Plenty of people driving around in diesels who are doing that mileage. Audi A3 Sportback? Kia Cee'd? Hyundai? Golf?

Is that not the sort of price for a new Fabia in Ireland?

Use the 5000 you saved to tax it for five years.

Just throwing it in there. A fabia...

You can get a new 1.2 polo paddy spec for 11k I think. But from an accord to that would be horrible.

Surprised nobody suggested an S6, an M3 from the third century BC, a 535d and the likes yet ;)

More seriously, it really depends if you just want a daily commuter or something a bit fun. In all fairness, some smaller cars/hatchbacks can be quite surprising on this aspect...perhaps you might wish to go for something that isn't driven by 1 out of 3 drivers around; Don't ask why, but "Citroen C4" comes to mind.

Alfa Romeo GT JTD with change to spare. Better bang for for your buck than any other coupe / hatchback. An 08 should be around 8k although i don't see any up at the minute. 150bhp and over 40mpg.

Thanks for the replies. Mrs. was thinking of this http://www.rightpricecarsprussiastreet.ie/viewanad.php?ad_id=862112 or a 207. Of course theres the Renault 'build quallty' to take into account.
