This is €229 in Smyths and other places.

The new 500Gb one is also reduced to €280

It would be cheaper to buy the 12GB model and then change out the HD.
Easily pick up a 500GB HD for less than €100.

Can they be changed easily? Any 2.5" sata?

    Pretty much.
    Standard in a PS3 is 5400rpm, 9mm.

    EDIT:
    Apologies.

You also need a mounting bracket:
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-PlayStation-Replacement-Mounting-Bracket/dp/B009CV1OVC/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1351530074&sr=8-5

Still works out cheaper by buying the 12GB model, new HD and the mounting bracket.

You do need the mounting bracket for the 12GB, it's €10 in Smyths and I've seen it for a bit more online but I don't know what other B&M shops will have it.

The mount differs to the ones used in the older slim and the fat so they can't be used.

Nice find OP - dammit, I only bought one last week...

Standard 2.5" SATA drive works fine, I had upgraded my fat PS3 from 40Gb to 320Gb, and I just moved the new disc across with the eur10 bracket mentioned above.

Bear in mind that the simplest data transfer method is by ethernet cable from old PS3 to new PS3 so you need a hard disk in each...

    Cheers,
    Eddie

holy carp, i thought the 12gb was a typo, and i lol'd, then found out its really REALLY not..... is that not, like, abysmal size? games on average take up about 2gb i believe- I'll always remember MGS4 needing 5gb free space for temporary "install" files, and that wasnt even for the full game, just a section!

Thanks OP, ordered one last night and picked it up today.

Will pick up a bracket for it and take the 320gig HDD out of my dead 40gig and that will be a new 320gig slim up and running for €190 :D.

That's easy if you don't want to keep any of the data on your hard disk from the old PS3.

If you want to retain your data - media, savegames etc - it's not so easy. The contents of the disk are encrypted and tied to your dead PS3... When you put the disk from the old PS3 into the new PS3, the first thing it does is format the drive.

What I had to do can be summarised as:
1 - sync trophies etc on old PS3 with PSN
2 - backup 320Gb drive from old PS3 to external storage
3 - put borrowed 160Gb drive into old PS3 and format
4 - restore to old PS3 from external storage
5 - insert 320Gb drive in new PS3 using new bracket, and format
6 - connect old PS3 to new PS3 using Ethernet cable
7 - use Data Transfer utility under "System" to migrate all data
8 - sync trophies etc on new PS3 with PSN
9 - take 160Gb drive out of old PS3 and return to owner
10 - enjoy new (and quiet) PS3 with all data intact

    Hope this helps someone...

    Cheers,
    Eddie

The 12Gb is flash storage, which becomes unavailable once you add a HDD.

Thanks for the tip been looking for a ideal Christmas gift for my brother think the 12GB is a bit small considering he loves playing Skyrim on Mine and to install that alone is about 6GB so think I might strip a broken Laptop hard drive for more memory :)
