Online work and tax

    Hi everyone,

Just looking for some advice about working online. I'm currently living in Spain (until next June) and employed as an English teacher in a private school. I'm paying the Spanish version of PAYE and social security. I have a bit of free time and want to finally get into freelance translation (I have a Master's degree in it but never really had the time to get started until now).

I'm doing some unpaid work for various non-profits and charities but I've also seen some opportunities for paid work on websites such as Freelancer. I'd love to take a few projects but what's the story with tax? It's a tremendous hassle and expense to register as self-employed here and it wouldn't be worth it for the odd small job. Would it be possible to just get paid via Paypal and not worry about it or do they all report you to the tax authorities? Do I even have a tax liability for 20 euro here and 30 euro there?

I'm not sure that we can advise you about the Spanish tax situation here.

But if you were livingi in the Republic, yes you would be liable to pay tax on that sort of income.

How long are you going to stay in Spain for?

I'm not talking about Spain specifically, I mean in general. Do people who do the odd job on Freelancer fill out tax forms and declare it? I'm in Spain until June.

Yes. And they make sure that they claim the relevant expenses incurred, too.

Seems a bit OTT to register as self-employed and submit a tax form for tiny amounts of money here and there. Every freelance translator I know waited to see if they were going to make money before they sorted out all the paperwork, but perhaps they then declared past work done, I don't know.

It might be nice to start an info thread on working online/freelancing in general. I'm hoping to set myself up as a freelance translator next year but the whole thing seems really daunting.
