Questions about exams

Couple of things I've often wondered..

If you have to answer x of y questions, say 3 of 5 like many exams, what happens if you answer 4 or 5? Do they just mark your first three or do they have to mark them all and credit you for your best 3? Sometimes I can't decide which of two questions I'd do best at (or at least, which I'd do least-badly at :D), and I've been tempted to give an extra one a shot if I've 25 mins to kill.

Also what happens if you just don't turn up for an exam, without any excuse? Are you still allowed to repeat it? There are some exams I've passed without expecting to but there have been a few I knew were a waste of time and I'd have been better off spending the time preparing for other ones. Obviously not the sort of question you can ask your lecturer though.

I'm pretty sure it's up to the lecturer, no set rule.

Some lecturers will state on the paper "if you answer more than 3 questions please state which you would like corrected"

I suppose if that's not there its either your best 3 or possibly the first 3 if they wanna be harsh about it

Generally they pick the best three. The most disgusting one I've seen was where a student had answered the same question three different ways and the lecturer instructed the marker to give them the marks for the best attempt. In mathematics, at least, this is completely ridiculous carry-on.
