Hi, Ive been told by my son that in order to learn to drive in Ireland he needs the following: (I quote)

in Ireland you take 12 min lessons
before you take test you have to have insurance on your own car for min 6 months
    incl car

he seems to think he has to OWN that car, ie he needs a car buying....i'm sure thats not correct but dont live over there anymore, could someone please confirm it for me? Sorry for my ignorance but as I say I dont live over there

He DOES have to take a minimum number of lessons from a registered instructor.
He DOES NOT have to own his own car.

It's quite possible to only take lessons in an instructor's car and practice and do the test in a friend's car (with appropriate insurance), or even to only ever drive the instructor's car, including for the test.

Nice try on his part though.

    This page may help.

He need to do 12 Compulsory EDT driving lessons with an ADI instructor.

He needs to have his first learner permit for a least 6 months, can only be valid for 6 months until sitting test. After that doesn't matter once he has had his 1st learner permit valid for 6 months he can sit the test once the 6 months are up or any time after that doesn't matter once it valid for the first 6 months.

I think he got confused regarding the 6 month rule.

No he doesn't have to own a car and have to have 6 months insurance before sitting a test. He doesn't even have to have a car, just one to practise in but driving in an instructors car isn't enough though. He need to practise in between even if its your car or who ever he chooses to drive with as his accompany driver. Once the insurance, tax disc and NTC disc are up to date and valid that all that matter. They have to be valid for the test to be conducted. Depends which car he use for test either his own/accompany driver's car or the instructors car (you pay a few to hire the instructors car for the test).

There will be a list of checks with the letter/email with the test date/time being issued. You can find it on the RSA website the list of checks, brakes/tyres/lights in order and so on. No fancy things on the windows and so on. Car clean and so on.

For example, He can go on your insurance policy and you as owner of car and named driver he can be a named driver too but you'd be the main named driver. I think there is a special rate for those who are doing lessons if they do it with avia they get 6 months insurance on what ever car they drive whether its their own or not I think maybe that's what might have been thinking of?
