What to do with an old laptop?

    Hi,
I'm getting a new laptop in January so I'll have an old machine lying around. It's an Acer Extensa 5230e, Windows Vista Home Basic, 1GB DDR2 RAM, 160GB hard drive, Intel Celeron clocked at 2.1GHZ. It's a slow laptop that freezes regularly. I'm either going to trade it in when I buy a new laptop, or install a new operating system on it, possibly Ubuntu. What do you recommend? What Linux distro should I use first? I'm new to Linux and I'm not familiar with the command line so a text based installation is not an option. If I choose the Linux route I'll mainly be using it for familiarising myself with Linux and teaching myself to program.

Stick on adverts.ie if you wish to sell it or reinstall the OS and keep it as backup lappy.

Stick linux on it, use it as a media server maybe? USB hub and as many hard drives as you like, wired to your router to stream files all over the house. Torrent server too?
