Ok so I'm about to dry off anyways... but seriously.... I can't figure out these crazy cell count readings I've been getting since November. eg. December 6th: 312; December 8th: 600!!! WTF?

I mean I've been driven crazy checking the milk the past month... the usual checks, no overmilking, twice a day milking etc... no staph/ecoli from what I can see...

I expect counts in the 300's coming closer to calving but
can anyone account for these crazy jumps??? And yes I've been drying off low milkers too....

now i would have been a more of a spray in the general area of the udder type of person as the row was walking out... ahi guy put blue towel on the teats i had sprayed and tbh it was quite embarassing the cover that was on the teats, one spin had no spray on it at all:eek: now i make sure each spin has spray dripping off it... Had to laugh as eldest kid teat sprays the cows sometimes and i was giving out to him for using so much spray, my 11 year old was spraying them properly, now use 20litres of spray a week instead of 10 litres and scc is down.... i was blaming everything else but it makes a difference

AHI are doing good work on the whole cell count front in fairness to them, check here for lots and lots of info: http://www.animalhealthireland.ie/page.php?id=135. Click on the headings in that page ("Introduction", "Calving" etc), and a report opens up for ya.

Whelan, When ya say yours has reduced enormously, for the whole tank, or milk recording, and do ya mind saying how much by? I'm just after throwing away the dipcups myself, and use a sprayer only now, the dipcups are too inconsistent, esp if your in a rush.

if milk rec. u should act on results . high scc cows are a disaster for liftin overall bulk reading. dip them after milking . i gave up being sympathetic to these ladies a while back and started showing them the door. scc over 400,000 not to long ago . dipping and culling has it at 50,000 today with not many new infections.

all it means is you have infection in your herd, its just some cows will have sealed off the infection for a while

Thanks lads, those sudden jumps within a week from lets say a 240 reading to a 400+ had me stratching what hair I still have left on my head .... Used to feel like I had problem solved on a Monday only to get a rude awakening on a Friday....

afair scc works in a cycle of around 20 days , so you think you have it sorted and it goes back up... pain in the butt, if its not scc, its tbc or thermoduric, hate those glanbia alert texts
