Did you order the buttons on their own to use with the old tags you already have or did you just order the new yellow tags with the sampler included?

I got fifteen sets of new tags , the new tagger and four replacement tags for just over E90 .
You will need to get the new tagger for taking the ear sample . It will be handy to have two taggers though , you can have both tags loaded for tagging besides fiddling with the second tag when you have the calf held .
You dont have to tag the new calves until the 1st of jan but it would probably make sense to do the new calves that are coming now just to be sure they dont have it aswell and be mingling with next years calves .
On listening to the people here on boards they all seem to using Enfer for the testing , Its E3.90 per sample or E3.60 if you bulk buy a few tests beforehand and they text you the result .

Ok have been doing this BVD biz for a year already so here's my two cents...

Any calves born on or after Jan 1st 2013 need to be BVD tagged, at present it's ok to tag away til end of year as normal

When you order tags (in my case) from Mullinahone Coop for 2013 the tags will be slightly different in order for you to take a tissue sample from an ear. You will need a tagger which can be obtained through the coop also when you are ordering your 2013 tags.

If you have regular tags left over from a previous order that you are currently using up, you can get some BVD tags customised for those spares on your farm....
basically all your info is on this website, just take your time, give it a read and give me a shout if you need further clarification - it's straight forward once you get into the swing of it:

How soon do you put the button tag in - 24 hours??

Can you hold the tissue samples for a few weeks till you have a few to send off together or should they be sent immediately?

i tag them as soon as they are born, send samples away once/twice a week... i even put some samples through the washing machine and sent them off then;)

Yes you will need new tagger, however I suggest keeping old tagger for non sample tag to avoid changing needle each time
You MUST tag all calves dead or alive from Jan 1 2013
You will get all you need from Mullinahone, any tags left from last year will be matched with test buttons
We use Enfer bulk deal done through co-op on money stopped from account
Now for the hard part, your last question....despite the fact that you have been vaccinating for a few years doesn't mean your calves will be bvd free. It actually means that they are antibody positive if you think about it you have infected them but this level actually offers protection.
By testing you are not testing for antibody positives but virus positives. What this testing scheme is trying to find are the 'PI' (persistantly infected) animals in the national herd. These are the ones that spread the disease a long story to ex plain spreading!
We tested every animal on our farm last year from babies to cull cows and only found 1 PI so do not get too worked up about it. As you have been vaccinating you at least have been aware and probably have unwittingly removed problem cows.....longwinded answer I hope it is of some help

you use your own envelopes and stamps. i put samples and a piece of paper with herd identifier, phone number and number of samples into a small plastic bag in to the envelope

had 1 positive, i was surprised really healthy aax heifer calf, would have sold her on if i hadnt of known,,, my dad had a pb aa bull calf show up positive the same week as mine, both where taken by local knackery, was surprised tbh... another tip i learnt is i wrote the address of enfer in my diary, underneath it i write down the date i sent samples away and how many , then i just tick it off when i get the results. One batch of samples went missing so if you havent gotten the results after a week ring them
