I'm sure I heard somewhere that people wake up that many times during the night anyway we just don't really remember it. So it's not that irregular a sleep pattern.

I wake 3 - 4 times a night too. It doesn't seem to affect my sleeping though, I just turn over and go back to sleep within a few minutes. No problémo

It seems it was very common in the past for people to get up after 3 or 4 hours for about an hour and then go back to sleep. There was a name for the period of night you'd do this. Wherever I read this it seemed to be a time when people might get the odd chore done or read something, or ride the person beside them.

I used to do the last one.

I used to be a light sleeper and would wake up at the slightest noise. I remembered my dreams because more often than not, I was not fully sleeping.

A number of years ago (9-10) I took 5HTP for abut 6 months before stopping. I sleep like a log now and have done for the last decade.

Like any drug, natural or synthetic, there can be side effects so maybe talk to a professional.

Big old hit off the vaporizer before bed, 5 minutes of rolling your head around on the pillow (because it feels great) then off to sleep, waking fresh and alert in the morning. Hard to beat.

5HTP isn't available in Ireland and and needs to be monitored in any case. Doctors won't prescribe it because they don't know enough about it.

I don't get REM sleep, I'm like a zombie most of the time..

Travelled recently and had such bad jet lag I hallucinated for hours, it was horrid, still haven't slept right since. I get to repeat it on Saturday.

Stress and/or pain is the main reason for lack of quality sleep. I hope you can get it sorted because it sucks ass not getting proper rest and effects every other area of your life.

Like being a child again, cradled in your parents arms.

It's not that you actually get up out of the bed but that you wake momentarily and then go back to sleep. It doesn't even register with you that you wake up.

Yes I've read of this before, (probably in one of my many insomnia fuelled internet searches).

Google "8 hour sleep myth" and it brings up a lot of links/sources for the thing you are talking about.

Here's an extract from the first bbc link:
His book At Day's Close: Night in Times Past, published four years later, unearths more than 500 references to a segmented sleeping pattern - in diaries, court records, medical books and literature, from Homer's Odyssey to an anthropological account of modern tribes in Nigeria.

Much like the experience of Wehr's subjects, these references describe a first sleep which began about two hours after dusk, followed by waking period of one or two hours and then a second sleep.

"It's not just the number of references - it is the way they refer to it, as if it was common knowledge," Ekirch says.

During this waking period people were quite active. They often got up, went to the toilet or smoked tobacco and some even visited neighbours. Most people stayed in bed, read, wrote and often prayed. Countless prayer manuals from the late 15th Century offered special prayers for the hours in between sleeps.
And these hours weren't entirely solitary - people often chatted to bed-fellows or had sex.

A doctor's manual from 16th Century France even advised couples that the best time to conceive was not at the end of a long day's labour but "after the first sleep", when "they have more enjoyment" and "do it better".

    .

It used to be available in all health shops but disappeared years ago. Still easily got via online supplement stores, even those with .ie shops.
