Car van and paying toll charges etc?

I was considering buying a small Diesel Car Van and was wondering the situation with road tax etc. Some can pay commercial tax but assume you need a vat number or something to do this so I would be paying normal tax rates. Now i pass toll bridges quite regular and if im to pay for something like this its much more than a normal car, so im been penalised although im not using it to carry goods or provide services. Any advice would be welcome.
    tks, ed

When I used to drive a carvan I got charged the commercial rate at tolls despite being private and not carrying goods behind

If your in a commercial you pay commercial rate .... And yes it's galling to see big jeeps paying less than you in a small car van but hey ....
Of course if you go to the unmanned booth and dump your coins in the bin, away you go no prob ...

yea worth a try:D but still its a weird one..... what do you need to tax as a commercial? thats normally cheaper and would even out the toll bridge charges....

I can verify from experience that this does not work

Go through at the coin basket, you'll only be charged the car rate.
If you pass through at an operator, tell them you've seats in the back (depending on what you have obviously) and you'll get the car rate.
This worked for me with a transit and a merc 709 with 'temporary' passenger rear seats we used for gigging.

    M1 charged as van
    M3 charged as van
    M4 charged as van
    M7 charged as van
East link toll gate charged as van

    Despite saying its private

Coin baskket and teller, didn't matter. Still charged as van

How did that work? Did you just throw in extra money than the €1.80 required?

i have personally drove a van through toll and place the car price into the basket and it works fine!

but the question as part of this thread was why? your been charged extra for something the same size with no saving in tax.

Your guess is as good as mine.

Very annoying to be charged commercially for private tax. Although others would say it was a van thus should be charged as a van.

Point remains the van started out as a car when I bought it but no matter where I went I was charged the higher rate

I frequently go through the toll bridge on the m8 in cork and always pay 3.30 at the maned station. I have a Astra van taxed privately what would actually happen if I tried to go through the automated barrier where you through in the coins would I be just charged 1.80 or would I still pay 3.30. Has anyone tried it I always assumed I just had to pay 3.30 and go through the manned barrier regardless of the private road tax.

System reads your registration and charges accordingly doesn't it?

i had a car that was brought in as a carvan by dealer..... on the registration it is down as carvan..... i drove this through the M6 toll for almost 2 years. at the manned boot they charged 3.20, in the basket i put in 1.80 and it opened every time.... no issues...... also i had it taxed privately...

Except when your taxing it! It's ridiculous that if your using as a private car, private tax etc that you should pay commercial rates at tolls! They don't seem to worried about changing it either!

To tax a commercial vehicle, you have to fill out a declaration stating what the nature of your business is and get it stamped in the Garda station.I don't know if the Revenue Commissioners cross check these forms against income tax records or not.

No problem. This was introduced by the Green Party to stop people using commercial jeeps and pick ups as private cars.In theory,as far as I know, a Garda can stop you if you are using a commercial vehicle to drop kids to school etc.In practice I think they have better things to do with their time than harass ordinary people going about their business.

My mother was asked for the company vat number when taxing our bigger van commercially which wasn't an issue for us but if you didn't have a vat number it would be an issue. It really depends on which tax office you go to some lads still get away with it but don't assume you will be allowed to tax your van commercially as it is illegal to tax a van commercially and use it for private use. So if you get away with it fine but if the tax office asks you for a vat number you have to give it to them or tax the van privately.

You do not need a VAT number to tax a commercial vehicle

You do realise you have to turnover a certain minimum value before you can get a vat number not sure of the figure I think it's around 20k euro that's a lot of eggs.

Ill try the automated barrier on the m8 tomorrow night on my way home and see how much I'm charged.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,042 ✭✭✭Bpmull

I only paid 1.80 euro on the automated barrier tonight on the m8 cork. Although I didn't see any cameras. Still annoying when I paid 3.30 for the last 3 months.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 75 ✭✭pom pom snaz peeler

yep, usually works on number plate but i was also told by a truck driver there was sensors for height and width on vehicles so if your in a car van you have a good chance of getting through at the lower rate....

I sometimes drive a Primastar van, the first times I went through both the Limerick Tunnel coin operated barrier and the Watergrasshill coin operated barrier I was charged only 1.80. The second time at each one I was charged 3.30. :-(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 891 ✭✭✭doctorchopper

Some work and some don't, some have ANPR that will tell the correct rate. The toll in Limerick works, toll by Kells doesn't.
