Does anyone know which is the best prepay internet broadband service in ireland?, who provides the best service?, including usage per month GBytes that is and at what cost. Meteor look like they have a decent service but i have heard one or two complaints about them. Are Vodafone any good?

depends on where you are and your setup - you can check the masts in your area here on the siteviewer map http://www.askcomreg.ie/mobile/siteviewer.273.LE.asp .....

i live in a small town and am on meteor - we were with O2 but the speeds were awful ... meteor came online with a slightly better package and when we joined them first the speeds were great as the contention ratio was nil i'd say - in the last few months more have come online and it has declined during the day ... at first we were paying 20 a month for a 20 gig download cap but after upgrading a phone on a broadband account and signing up to an 18 month contract we are now paying the same for a 50gig download cap .... speeds now range from 1mb during the day to 5 at night as more people have started using the service....

we use a 3g router placed upstairs to get better reception and also it means everyone in the house can connect by wireless effortlessly

i know you are asking about pre pay but imo for the money you get no worth

Thanks for the info interested in what you pointed out about meteor has they seem to have the best coverage in the skerries area. They are also offering a mobile modem called a hotspot which can configure 5 devices i am with eircom but am interested in switching to meteor only to save money, eircom are more expensive but i would like to find out more before i make any moves.

a 3g router is like a hotspot but it would take a little bit more time and knowledge to setup ... if you go for the router google the setup or post on this thread if you run into problems ... you will need an apn which for meteor is broadband.mymeteor.ie
i personally would go for the router as you have more choices/options of what to do with it ... if you start to learn about routers you can config them to your own needs ....i now have mine setup to network two computers(xp and 7) and two wii's in the house to stream music and movies to one another.
if i were to start again i would get a 3g router which is compatible with tomato software ... i've only started to learn about it but from what i gather tomato software on a router gives you much more control of how your router works . someone else here may have more info as i have only read about it ....

if you ask around you may find someone in your area on a meteor dongle - see how it works for them - a meteor phone would give you a fair idea also through the 3g network - browsing etc . speedest on android phone also would give you a good indication

if you do go wih meteor and the 3rd party router contact them and ask them to set up an an online account registered to the broadband mobile number. this way you can log on through the web and chk your data usage. normally you can check your usage through the dongle software but in my case because i use a third party router this does not work. i have requested an online login twice and both times the person on the other side of the phone hasn't had a clue what i am on about. be patient/polite ...explain to them that you have seen/heard of this been done before .. tell them you are using a dongle with a third party router and that you cannot check the data usage through the dongle software as you are not using it . ask them to setup an online broadband number login .. if the are struggling with that suggest to them to contact technical support to get their opion/help

i never in my life thought i would have the internet come through a dongle - but after looking at options prices and packages and a little haggling with meteor retention team :) (i've been a customer for about 10 years) i am delighted to say i get 50gb donwload cap - 1-5GB speeds (enough for me-not a gamer) and a 200min/text/1GB data/free meteor calls/texts phone package for around 45 yo yos a month ..... and two smart phone upgrades in the last twelve months . btw when i signed for the 18t month braodband account i was given a nokia 800 for 100 euro - this was 6 months ago - i got it in the o connel st store limerick ... seems like nobody else in the company would offer this but from what i understood was the manager in this store was paying attention at a meeting one day .... it suited me down to the ground as i had only got a phone for my partner on my own phone account upgrade 4 months before that ......

there is one downside to all this ... i've had to switch off/on the router usually once a day as the connection will drop . i think it is down to the router i have - upgraded the firmware but the problem still persists - in the past i have been on eircom/digiweb lines .... they weren't much better imo

    good luck with it all
