Mankind finally confronts the greatest mystery of the deep as the first-ever footage of a live giant squid in its natural habitat is revealed in Discovery Channel’s Monster Squid: The Giant Is Real, which premieres on Sunday, January 27, 2013 at 10/9c as the season finale of Curiosity. NHK will air their special on the first-ever footage of the giant squid in early January 2013.

As far as I'm aware they've never been filmed alive in the wild at least. I thought they had only found the odd carcass before now?

I seem to recall seeing a video of some tentacles a while ago, but no entire squid.

I think maybe it was a giant squid that was filmed trying to grab some bait from a fishing trawler as seen below. It was not filmed in its natural habitat as far as I'm aware though.

Here's an actual sneak peek. The giant squid they filmed is about three meters long, quite small, but that doesn´t make it any less beautiful!

I really hope this doesn´t lead to people attracting the squid to capture them and having them as trophies or something. Critter has been one of the few large animals that didn´t have to worry much about humans until now...

I found it interesting that the squid is a silver-gold color instead of the red we're used to...

Thats really remarkable, because I read before that the lifespan of a giant squid is only estimated to be 3 years, so its amazing that they can mantain a globe-wide mating population given their short life-span.

I love reading about the giant squid. Its one of those enigmatic creatures that we seem to be learning more and more about.

I remember when I was young I had a book called Unexplained Mysteries, and it had lots of cryptids such as big foot, nessie etc. but it also included the giant squid in there. Its moved far beyond that now, and into the physical science, where we have filmed a live specimen and are now studying their DNA!
