On a serious note, who actually done their banking with Anglo?

Ive been thinking about this for some time now. Who are the people who used bank with Anglo?
Because while it is shambolic to have to pay the debts of any bank, it is even more shambolic when its a bank that weren't commercial in the sense AIB or BoI were in the sense of people saving their hard earned dough with, etc.

Perhaps ill be surprised by the results of the poll im submitting and fair enough but to be honest i couldn't even tell you if there was a local Anglo branch in any of the towns near to me, yet everyone and perhaps two further generations down the line (maybe more) are going to be burdened with the debts as a result of their reckless lending.

I often wondered if you were interview people on the streets and ask a sample from every town of city in Ireland if they banked with Anglo how many would actually say yes so im hoping this poll might give me some indication.

If this poll is in the wrong forum then i apologise and would ask Mods to move it but id appreciate posters to give their honest contributions to this question and feel free to add further info. :)

Perhaps im wrong but i actually feel its a valid question and ok forgive me i havent actually checked to see if its been posted before.

The money was just resting in my account.

That poll had better be private! :D

Yes it is. If people banked with them sure what harm its their right to bank with who they like. My feeling is very few Irish people other then the elite had any dealings with them and yet the greater population is having to get them out of the sh*t because Anglo's lovers in the government said so

Vote either way. You wont be lynched and you dont have to give any info you feel uncomfortable with giving out. Just trying to get and indication of how utilised they were by the population prior to their implosion and subsequent saving

Why would I expect to be lynched? We borrowed, We paid back. Simple as.

We had a family home mortgage. AFAIK Anglo were mainly a commercial bank. Im guessing most people here wont have interacted with Anglo.

As a further study it would be interesting to get the demograph of the Anglo customers and the type of services they required. For now numbers will do.

    Like day to day banking?

I did some banking with them before things got very very shaky (as opposed to totally shady in an obvious public way)

up to around the time they were offering 7-8% on regular savings and 5% on annual deposit (with a decently short notice period for withdrawals - 7 days or something)

knew it was crazy high interest rates and there was probably something fishy but also took the risk because amounts were way below the older lower deposit guarantee amount at the time so took the risk

at that time I kind of wished I had the balls/clout to get a big short term loan @ 3/4% (which were available at the time) and deposit it at the 5% and pocket the difference when it came to payback time

I know, I know...I represent all thats wrong with this fair land etc

They had few proper branches as such. They really would have had offices in a few parts of the country and very little cash dealings AFAIK. So I'd say few people had a current account with them. It was almost like a private bank.

OP, you missed the numerous discussions in the media and pretty much everywhere on the banks 'systemic importance', or lack thereof.

I didn't know they dealt with personal banking and even if I did. I would have probably thought that I would have been laughed out of the bank because my income level wouldn't be high enough for them.

I had a book of savings stamps with them, I believe that I'm still owed the princely sum of 7 shillings and 6 pence.
Did the government issue me a promissory note for the full amount?
    Did they fukc Joe.

OP the bank was tiny. No-one in their right mind banked with them. Certainly not anyone I know.

As an aside people were queueing down the street before the guarantee was introduced. Withdrawing their cash and leaving their loans un touched.

They didn't offer current accounts, so you couldn't have called them a full-service bank.

    They mainly collected savings.

    They had maybe 5-6 branches.

They didn't really offer personal loans or mortgages.

They were heavily engaged in property and construction lending.

My brother had maybe 10k, rising to 50-100k on deposit with them.

Would anybody do their banking with a bank that hadn't got a single ATM?

NIB now have no ATMs, yet they have thousands of customers.

I had lump sums on deposit with them, medium term. Great interest rate and excellent staff service. I don't understand the point of the thread. To everyone in the outside world, they were a well performing bank, so why wouldn't anyone have done business with them?

I never borrowed from them BTW

    Either

Who has done their banking with Anglo? ( The perfect past tense)

    or

Who did their banking with Anglo? ( The imperfect past tense).
