Lessons vs Hours

Just wondering is it mandatory to take 12 lessons, because I see lots of places offering classes that are much more than on hour long.

Could I take 4 3 hour classes instead of 12 one hour ones.

I have had my provisional for 10 months and haven't driven once

Technically, it is possible to do it as you suggest but practically it isn't ideal and I'd certainly be advising against it.
By your own admission you are a new/novice learner and you wouldn't be giving yourself time to practice the skills you'll learn in each EDT lesson

Get a few lessons (1 hour) with an Instructor and they will advise the best way that suits you. If you can practice every day then you can maybe do them more frequent. If an Instructor is delivering a 2 hour lesson an only issuing 1 EDT, I,d want to know this in advance.

Its more about the actual lessons really what you learn from them, how you progress and how you doing in between practise sessions will get you through the lessons quicker but you still need to do the 12 EDT lessons if you got your first learner permit on or after 4th of April 2011.

To be honest, it depends how much you pick up and so fast I suppose. Everyone is different what suit one person might not suit you.

Best to start off with an hour first as you might pick a different instructor. You know after a few lessons if you are learning something or not from them get another instructor. Structured learning can be important not just practise in between. Practise in between will improve your progress with your instructor mind.

Take it step by step at first, go for one lesson see how it goes, go for a few lessons and see how that goes if you progressing and learning at a reasonable pace and feel you are learning something then stick with the instructor/lessons. Keep at them and the practise.

Try to get to know and understand the car, get the basics right first and lessons will fall into place but a lot of it is down to how you learn, what you learning, how you and what you pick up and apply it in practise. Do lots of practise.

I think you'd learn more in an hour than you would in 2-3 hours in one session your brain can only absorb new information and apply in practise - brain-leg-movement, safety, rules of the road confidence, keeping the nerves held together and multitasking isn't something learnt over night. You have to learn gradually step by step and build up what you learning and build up your experience.

Only do 2-3 hour sessions unless you are doing your lessons and then practising!? or if you have a tight schedule! Its when it comes nearer to test time/doing pre-test that 2-3 hour sessions might work to tie things up a bit but I think you learn more in an 1 hours session once a week or once every two weeks in my opinion, consistency is the key. You be sick of it and not learn much in 2-3 hours I say unless you more experienced behind the wheel.
