Favourite Fantasy Character

Who is your favourite fantasy character & why?

So many to choose from so many brilliant books!

I gave this a lot of thought and narrowed my list down to include Kvothe (Name of the Wind), Druss (Drenai Series), Pug (Riftwar series etc), Mara (empire series), Jorg (Broken Empire) but in the end I went for a character from one of the first fantasy series I ever read :

    Belgarath (Belgariad & The Mallorean)

He is kind of the ultimate fantasy character for me, awesome range of powers, thousands of years old , capable of kind and cruel acts and comes across as a real rogue type character. The stories themselves are really just easy reading but I thought the Belgarath character in particular was really well written and I loved the later book as told from his point of view.

    Whiskeyjack.

He's the man. Compassionate despite all he's been through, and his story is pretty heartbreaking.

In the same vein, Karsa Orlong. I think a good way to sum him up is simply say "No f*cks given".

Feck can't believe i forgot the malazan, add Tehol and bugg to your list.

It's a toss up between Vin Venture and Arya Stark for me.

Off the top of my head........

Tyrion Lannister would be one of my favourites ,love his humour and his outlook on life.Makes me laugh a lot.

Kvothe from Name of the wind would be another one of my favourites. An all round interesting character with many strings to his bow.

Jorg Ancrath From Prince of Thorns, again my type of humour.

Rincewind from Discworld - who survived many massacres by being a continent away.
Silk from the Belgarion series - who as a short rat featured chap survived to own most of the money in that world.
Thursday - my favourite day of the week and original policeman battling the nihilist hordes.

    Quoting myself from another thread.
    The Saga of Recluce
I really recommend this series specially to those who are just starting to read Fantasy Books.

Magi'i of Cyador and Scion of Cyador- My favorites in the series. Though all of the Recluce books are related, these 2 books are directly connected. I highlighted this 2 because it stars my favorite hero in all of Fantasydom, Lorn. He's incisive, competent, decisive, and ruthless. He has no compunction in killing an innocent if it means his survival or for the greater good.

I don't know how many times I've lost my temper because the Hero let's the Villains get away because of their Morals. Or how they became paralyzed by indecision whenever the shedding of innocent blood comes up.

Not Lorn, though. His motto is probably, "Act Fast, Mourn the Consequnces later".

To add some more, he's also a great tactician. Winning battles fast with the least of casualties, due to excellent vision and planning.

He's also quick to recognize problems, and acts accordingly to neutralize them.

Like I've said in the other thread, if you can find me another Fantasy Character in the mold of Lorn, do recommend me the Book. Thanks in advance! :D

To add to this, as groups the Malazan Sappers in general and the Mott Irregulars are super characters.

Lady Mara of the Acoma, Mistress of the Empire.

Kalidan Stormblessed from The Stormlight Archive.

Would say more but spoilers. Great series cant wait for it to continue.

Kvothe from the Kingkiller Chronicles, as the books show us his life from a very small age, his motivations, his loves, his strengths and weaknesses

Thomas Covenant, the Unbeliever. Because heroes aren't perfect. Some times they can be evil.

Anomandaris Purake, Son of Darkness from Malazan Book of the Fallen. A black skinned "humanoid" born from darkness who veers into a dragon and holds a sword that feeds on souls

Raistlin from Dragonlance. See Thomas Covenant above

Inquisitor Glokta from First Law :D crippled and toothless ex-war hero who tortures citizens for a living is the most uncommon fantasy hero I could think of

durzo blint from the way of the shadows

    and tyrion/tywin lannister

if i had to pick one durzo blint

My favourite character is Dace/Tarantio in David Gemmel's "Dark Moon". We all have that duality in us.

Also he was/is my favourite author. :)

Great pick, I just started re reading some of Gemells books, they took me to a different world when I was a kid . Still find myself getting lost in them

Funny that none of Gemmels stuff never got optioned by Hollywood or HBO, even ultra cheap versions like that surprisingly watchable Spartacus series that Starz made a while back.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,047 ✭✭✭GerB40

Roland Deschaine from The Dark Tower (though I haven't finished the series so that might change.)

Abra from Doctor Sleep (The sequel to the shining)

Tyrion Lannister from A Song of Ice and Fire

Jack O Neill from Stargate SG-1

Jonathan Harker from the original Dracula

And probably more I can't think of at the moment..

Always wondered why Gemmell's books aint been turned into movies too Thargor. They seem to be very film friendly, much more so than other fantasy novels that have been used.

A TV Series about Gemmell's Drenai or the Jerusalem Man, would be Awesome!

I wonder who will be the Actors that would play Druss, Waylander, Skilgannon or Jon Shannow if they did do it?

Back when I was still keen on Wrestling, I always thought that Hulk Hogan would be perfect for Druss and the Undertaker would be good fit for Jon. :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 71 ✭✭Elothar

I'm not so sure about a TV series, they tend to get watered down by TV executives looking for the broadest base to appeal to. I'd love to see a Jerusalem Man film done by the people who did the last Dredd film. ;)

I agree that Ron Perlman would make an excellent Druss! I think 'The Undertaker' is a tad bit too big for my image of Jon Shannow, always saw him in the young Clint Eastwood mould. I think Tom Hardy would make a good Waylander, he's a good actor and could definitely play the anti-hero. Scott Adkins would make a good Skilgannon and Mark Dacascos a good Tenaka Khan (They've both got the moves to pull the characters off). ;)

Gandalf.. I know it's an easy pick & so obvious no one else has been corny enough to say but I've always loved him & always will!!

    Other than that-
Fitz or Nighteyes from the Farseer Trilogy (& others)
    Mara of the Acoma

I'm terrible with names but I can think of a few characters from a few books that ending the books felt like loosing a best friend!

The Tattooed Man from the Demon war saga (Brett)
One of the wives from WOT- the one that could fight!! (Jordan)
The guy from the StormLight Trilogy (sanderson)

    And lots more! :)
