Who was this hurling goalkeeper?

I'm trying to remember a country goalkeeper who was probably on the go in the early to mid-90s? I think he may have played for Cork but I'm not sure about that.

Maybe my physical description will hel you get it. He had black curly hair iirc and was VERY overweight. I mean you'd look at him and think what was he even doing on the pitch, but I guess despite his weight he must have been good.

Does that ring any bells here? Thanks.

Niall Patterson from Antrim perhaps? I have vague childhood memories of a unbelievable save vs Tipp in an all Ireland semi.

Sounds like Niall Patterson of Antrim to me too.

He was a great keeper in his day and played with the Antrim team that lost to Tipp in the 1989 final.

Despite his build, he was actaully a very good hurler. He is a colourful character and has a great singing voice.

    That semi was in 88.

The reason I recall that is because Galway went on to beat Tipp in the final that year.

The last time we won it. :(

Stoney burke. Played in goals for Wexford in 1992 (I think) is another possibility on the build side anyhow. David was his real first name. On the phone so can't link an image but google image him to get a photo.

Niall Patterson on Antrim. Was there in the late 80's and early 90's. I think he was in goal in '89 when Antrim played in the All-Ireland. Despite his size, he was not a bad keeper.
