The Provisional Driving lincence is going up to 55 euros on 1st January.

I think Provisional ones will be 35 euros.

Duplicates are going up to 35 euros on 1/1/13 from €10.

Pay less now and get stuck with a paper piece of crap.

Wait until new year and get a fancy card license. I know which I'd prefer.

No, get your new license now to your parents address and then in January change your address back to your own place for FREE and you get it replaced with the new one.

Heck, you get four photos when you get them anyway and you need 2 photos for each license.

    ;)

This is from a while back so it may be out of date.

    http://www.rte.ie/news/2012/0229/licence.html

Once this new form of licence is introduced, the old paper style will no longer be issued, but they will be still valid. However, any driver can trade in their old model for the new one before their renewal date for a fee which has yet to be decided.

If you "lose" it you can get a replacement or change your address.

it says different on their website

    http://www.rsa.ie/RSA/Licensed-Drivers/Driving-Licence-Changes/Driving-Licence-Changes-January-2013/

Who can get the new licence

After 19 January, 2013, the new plastic card licence will be available for those who need a new or renewed licence. You can only apply if:

you’ve passed your driving test and are applying for your first driver licence
you’re renewing your learner permit / driver licence
you’re exchanging a foreign driver licence for an Irish driver licence

All old paper licences are valid for a maximum of 10 years. We won’t accept applications for replacement of a paper licence with a plastic card licence, unless that licence has expired. For more information see How to apply.

There are only two times I ever look at my licence.

    1) checking the renewal date or renewing it.

    2) when asked to produce it,
Why would I want to pay €30 more for a fancy one?

Doesn't say what happens if you "lose";) your old one, which of course, will result in you being given a new style license.

For people like me who carry their license all the time, the old one is a PITA. I'll wait till the summer and probably lose mine then.

maybe because its a valid form of ID which now when its in circulation in its credit card plastic sized proportion has a certain benefit then carrying around an aqward oversized pink slip of paper

    Guessing you're a man....;)

When you're a lady and you change handbags (which I seem to do a lot), I never seem to move my licence from be bag to another. However if I had a dinky wee card that fitted in my wallet.......problem solved!!

Or you could just leave it in your car glovebox and it will never be lost (maybe stolen but not lost!)

Nope. Changes to license will cost €35. I'd assume that includes change of address, as a new license will have to be made/issued, so the same costs are incurred in making it.

And you handing over money to get it.

^ Same as the recent 'renew your motor tax before the budget and save €€€' thread, which although technically not a BA helped a lot of people save some money.

€35 for a plastic card:eek: . Typical. I really want that stupid oversized piece of frayed pink paper out of my wallet, but for €35, they can whistle for it

If I hypothetically lost my licese, does that have the same effect as losin your passport, as in you can only reapply a certain number of times before they won't issue any more ??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 63 ✭✭kmepll

They will charge you for a replacement licence as they will not be using passports photos but an outside agency like they do for taxi's.
SGS has been awarded the tender, which includes the capture of each individual's photograph for their driving licence on-site at one of SGS's locations to be set up around Ireland by September 2013.
SGS will not accept any photograph other than those captured on their premises by their machines.

For all my hating of the old driving licence, it has out lasted every card in my wallet that generally end up getting cracked from sitting on them etc.

I would like to thank the OP for bringing this to my attention and enabling me to save €20. In my opinion it is worthy of a thread in this forum.

I believe from memory that a change of address allows you get a new license for free. Getting a replacement because you lost one will cost you.

Why bother even posting this. It is useful to some so is an unusual BA but still a BA

I was informed by the RSA that the other option is to go for a three year license, and then apply for the new license type, once your license has expired. Unfortunately, I'm stuck with a pink paper license for the next 10 years. I switch between two vehicles, so have to carry the license in my wallet and couldn't wait the 6 weeks without having a valid license.

Just debating what to do. Passed my test in October and think it might be a good idea to get my licence now before the price goes up. Dilema whether to drive into cork or trust the post to get it there on the only two days they are working over the xmas ie Friday 28th and Monday 31st. mmm

well I got a bargain my licence is due for renewal on the 13th of Jan, I was going to wait til the New Year to do it which would have cost me €55 but by doing it in Dec it only cost me €25 so I saved €30 thanks OP:)

Only in Ireland would you have driving licences in the bargain bin:eek:. Better off keep the UK one which does till 70, few years left on it yet, a bit worn but as another poster said, paper ones outlive every other bit of plastic. hope it doesnt outlive me.

Them phaorohs knew what they were doing, wont get an Irish one till it comes in a papyrus roll.:D

I had laser eye surgery and no longer need glasses to drive. Never bothered replacing the licence but presumably it gives me grounds to do it legitimately as I shouldn't have the code on it any longer?

Yes, I did the same following laser eye surgery.
Surgery should have provided you with a valid eye test cert (provided surgery went well).
