Sick - to work or not to work

I usually work weekends, but had arranged this one (dec 8/9) plus Friday off. And as things go, I have a chest infection so spent my time off in bed. I rang my boss last night to see how the weekend went and explained that I have an infection, am on antibiotics and still have a temp. He then goes on to say, well we have x and y and z on the agenda, and I'll see you bright and early in morning, ready to face a busy week.

So I dragged myself our of bed this morn and am currently sitting at my desk with a thumping headache and the shivers. I'm supposed to be here until about 10pm tonight. There is lots to do, but tbh my head is pretty fuzzy. Looking for a bt of advice - not medical advice - but how to deal with the work thing. Do I just say - eff it, I'm not up to this, goodbye. Or do I stick it out and just do what I can?

The boss is under pressure so I understand where he is coming from, just wish he could see that me here in this state is not actually going to help him.

Go to doctor, get a sick note, give it to boss, let him deal with it.

You dont work when you are sick and noone has a right to make you.

Agree with the above. It's not like you're sick from drinking or anything that's your fault.

You are sick. You can't do your job properly in the state you're in and trying to do a full day's work will only make you worse.

Go home. Not only for your own sake but for the sake of your co-workers. Don't be the person who makes everyone sick a couple of weeks before Christmas.

This is actually unbelievable - some people never cease to amaze me. You're sick OP, just go home and tell your boss where to go. You quite clearly are coming down with the flu or something - there's only one place you should be, tucked up in bed!!

OP, apart from you going to suffer longer and quite possibly end up lot worse of than if you stayed at home in bed, you will quite likely pass what ever you have on to others which will ultimately cause more havoc than just one person being out.

You should have stayed in bed and if you are on antibiotics I presume you would have seen a doctor and gotten the sick note. Your boss should have no say in that case and if he knew what was good for his business he would have told you to stay away until you are fit for work again.

OP here again. I rang my GP and arranged a cert.

Then sat down with my boss. We usually have a good relationship and as i said he's under pressure, but it was like being met with a basin of ice cold water. He is not impressed and was short and on the verge of being rude.

I'm going home to wrap up warm but honestly, I've being here sick all day and it's like he doesn't even believe me. Ugh. Does he think I want to be sick or something

Are you still hanging on in work OP??? Seriously, go home. This man is being ridiculously unreasonable.

Youre not doing your colleagues any favours by being there, let alone yourself. Seriously, get out of there. Let your boss fire you if he likes; see how that works out for him...

It's called presenteeism I believe and it's almost as big a problem as absenteeism. Stay home and get well. No one likes a 'Typhoid Mary'.

    sickatwork,

While i no doubt you are ill and not fit for work , I am amazed that you could ring your doctor and arrange a certificate, did he/she not insist on seeing and examining you. Absenteeism in the workplace is a major cost & problem (look at the health service absentee rates). Some doctors contribute to this by issuing sick certs on request which from your post seems to be the situation.

As an employer when someone is genuinely ill i prefer them to stay off work and recover rather than come in and work at half steam.

    Hope you recover soon.

The doctor could have agreed to the cert based on the visit where he/she provided the prescription for the antibiotics. I suspect the OP thought they would be fine by Monday and may have turned down a sick cert if it was offered, as I've done in the past.

Also, OP, if your sick cert covers the days you were off then you're entitled to get those days back, if you took them as AL.
