This is a good price in Ireland for this and beats Argos at EUR260, but remember the following:
This price is for the white edition, which is the most basic model. They also sell the black edition for EUR472.
From my own research the white edition of GoPro Hero 3 is very similar to the previous GoPro Hero 2. (Open to expert correction on that!!!)
All the really fancy features come with the GoPro Hero 3 Black edition. And to a similar extent the Silver Edition.

The price of the GoPro Hero 2 is reducing a lot lately - on this website it is EUR354 for the motosport edition, which includes a few extras. Even allowing for an extra EUR50 off with chainreaction cycles, Argos have it for EUR245, which I think is a great price. Good prices also on Amazon.
In the US the Outdoor edition can be picked up for USD200 + tax = EUR175.
With the prices now very similar, I do wonder which is better - GroPro Hero 3 White edition or GoPro Hero 2 Motorsports/Outdoor edition?
Sorry for drifting away from the Bargain aspect.:)

Better camera and video quality on the 3, it's a different camera. The go pro 2 would have the old one no?

I must try and figure out the difference between the black and white, I thought it was just the colour, silly me. Lucky I didn't buy just yet.

Your right its not a bargin at all and it's worse than the go pro 2, deceptive labelling or what?

    Here's a comparison chart

I think the silver is the same video quality as the HD2, but comes with built in wifi and a better mic.

Unless im missing something , this comparison chart is comparing the white edition to the silver and black edition. It is still a go pro hero3 and has to be better than the hero2 ? No ?

It looks like the white only has a 5mp camera while the black has 12mp, that's one thing jumping out at me, that's a huge difference.

Spot on, White is lower spec then a Hero2.

The ma of a mate of mine mumbled something about "going pro" to help with the bills last week. This must have been what she was on about....

Thanks OP , I've been on the lookout for one of these to use while on a motorbike- don't know a lot about them, but it seems the gopro2 on sale in argos would be better than the new gopro 3 white, yeah? Anyone know what the battery life is like on them?

On a Hero2? It will do about 2-3 hours of recording per battery.

We just bought a Hero3 Black at work ( for the coolest application!) - think we got it from a bricks n mortar store at better price than online or Argos. I'll find out cost and store in a couple of hours and post it up.

so, anyone have any views as to which is the better option between the Gopro 3 white or the 2 HD?

Its a toss up. The white has lower MP stills, lower bust rate for stills, lower field of view in 1080p and has less mount sin the box BUT has built in wifi and a better microphone.

I would say a 2nd hand Hero2 with some extras is a better deal then a new Hero3 white. A Hero3 white is a great camera for the average user. The Silver and Black offer more pro features.

But does the 3 have much better recording abilities over the 2 hd given it has an 11mp camera vs the 5mp on the 3, or does that only come into play for snapshots/pics? I'd only be using it for recording journeys on the motorbike in case I was in an accident . Thanks

The sacrifice in recoding between the 2 is that the Hero3 white can't do wide angle 1080p due to the 5mp sensor while a Hero2 can do wide angle 1080p. There is obviously a big diference in stills between the 2. Id argue a Hero2 should be better in low light due to sensor size but the Hero3 white has a better lens so it probably evens out.

Video quality across the 2 should be the same in the same recording modes. I have watched some detailed reviews of the Hero2 versus the Hero3 Silver and video quality is identical on those.

it was a present for a mountainbike friend. he showed me a bit of footage on his mobile and it looked well. he used a helmet cam.

not sure if it was the motorsport edition but it was the pro2. looks decent craic.

So just wondering is this a good deal on the GoPro Hero 3+ Silver?

To be honest it is very confusing with all the different models! I'd be mostly using it for hiking, kayaking and cycling. Might use it in a car as a dashcam too. Oh and maybe while swimming. Any advice?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,240 ✭✭✭mel123

Yep its a great price, id snap it up if your in the market for one. There is a hero 4, but they all do the same job and its obviously more expensive. this model will do exactly what you want and more.
