Well done Ireland, fantastic result for Irish Athletics. Some achievement by Britton to retain her title, never an easy thing to do.

Something in fact that has been impossible to do for the women until today.

Some running from the girls.Just to give you an idea how good Rooneys run in NCAA was he beat Tom Farrell there and Tom finished 4th today.

Brilliant from all the Irish women, and hugely impressive from Brendan O'Neill after such a long season stateside. Lalli was poetry in motion in that men's race.

Awesome race today from Fionnuala, strong as an ox at the end to hold of Felix. And the other ladies, amazing team performance.

Great fight back from Felix too, in fairness. She looked dead and buried at one point.

It was, but she looked resigned/settled on 2nd place from quite a way out.

It was very strange how she kept looking over the shoulder when there was as big a gap back to third as there was between herself and Britton.

    Really gutsy performance by Britton.

Was Britton's win over a 10 km course?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,330 ✭✭✭✭Dodge

    Its usually something around 8k

    Yeah, it was 8k.

Thanks. I just thought it was a little too fast a time for 10 K. Then I thought that maybe it was very downhill. I just wish that RTE could have mentioned this in the report I read.

The course was lap-based (around 6-7 laps, if memory serves correctly), so difficult to have a very downhill course.

Got back late last night, great trip. Fionnuala and the girls were fantastic. Great celebrations as the winners enclosure was breached. We forgot how cold it was for a few minutes.

I was worried Fionnuala was doing too much of the work during the race and would be out foxed in the last stretch. Was shouting at the TV for her tuck in and let one of the other girls put in a shift at the front. But she was so strong and confident, the others just couldnt handle her pace. Honourable mention has to go to Linda Byrne who calmly worked her way through the pack and ran a stormer to come 8th. Very classy stuff.

Great article on her training including last session before the race.

EDIT article is a year old.

Best run of her life? I can't think of any better.

Benefit of the marathon training coming into play possibly.

That was the plan. Initially it was to sit back and then go around half way. Her coach walked the course a few times and the team then decided to put pressure on from the start.

same applies to Ava Hutchinson? What a year for her.
    1) Gets the Olympic A standard for marathon
    2) Selected for, and competes in, the Olympics
    3) Wins gold medal in European Cross Country team event

Without trying to patronisee/denegrade her, that's a fabulous year for her
