Ok sorry if this seems like a silly question, but here goes.

I regularly see pigeons in Dublin city center with missing toes, a foot or both feet gone.

Can anyone tell me why this is?.

A bacterial infection (Staphylococcus aureus) commonly called bumblefoot. The infection causes the foot to deform and commonly digits will fall off. In cities where there are loads of fera lpigeons the disease is common. You see it rarely in wild populations of Rock Dove (wild counterparts of feral pigeons), because their population densities would be much lower.

Poor things, are they in pain or discomfort?.

Thanks for the explanation! This guy seems comfy enough and him with no toes at all (apologies for resurrecting this old thread, I was looking for an answer to the same question)

There used to be a pigeon counselling service run from the back of Westland Row train station but it was cut back in last year's budget.

Possibly, and I would imagine they fall over a lot.

You should go to London. Pigeons over there for some reason don't seem to have toes. Just stumps
