private number plates

I was wondering has there been any talk about introducing private number plates in Ireland?

Since the government is trying to get a few euro out of everything, this would be a chance to raise some money.

I wonder what say "1D" would get at auction

You can purchase a numerical plate eg 131D911, cost is €1000, the 1 plate is normally reserved for the lord mayors.

What they could do is issue 'County Plates' for a fee (annual fee?) and even issue the physical plates - as is the case with trade plates (i.e. the expiry date is on the actual plate so it's obvious when the plate 'expires').

I'm sure many motorists would like plates like -

    WW-911
    911-WW
    007-WW
    WW-007
    007-D
    D-007
    1-D
    D-1
    WW-1
    1-WW
    320-KE
    KE-320
    MH-1234
    1234-MH
    DL-1
    1-DL
    999-DL

    etc etc etc etc etc....

The Isle of Man govt recently issued new MANX plates....

Well, here in London there's a Bentley I see often on my route to work with the plate '1D' the owner paid £352,000 three years ago!

I saw a few plates went up for sale in Australia SA21 & SA22 and both went for I think AU$50,000.

Even with recession and all I think there is plenty of money out there to make it a nice earner for the government, hey if it pays for a few schools or a hospital.

I simply cannot fathom the point of personalised number plates.

Does nothing but make the driver look like an idiot. Throwing €1,000 to reserve a number. Revenue must be laughing.

JJ Kavanaghs buses always took advantage of this system.

In Romania, where the format is [county] [##] [xxx], you can pay a tenner to choose the numbers and letters after the county. At that price, it'd be silly not to. :p

I can't see this ever happening as such. The €1000 to reserve a plate is as far as they will go. It was €350 but they got greedy as usual.

It's only around £30 to change your name by deed poll - then you'd have a private plate, Mr. 10D34567

Superb, everyone could know what you drive. :D

They'd end up putting up the price of changing your name to €1000.

Not being a muppet at all, I never met a Porche driver who wasn't an arrogant príck and the biggest príck I ever met was a guy I know who drove a Porche with a number plate 0XD911.

In Poland we've got a system where you can get a private plate in format [letter][number][3 to 5 personal characters] where letter describes county of registration while number is just consequent number in case of the same private characters in the same county.
So for example someone from around Krakow can get "K0 JOHNY". If there will be another person willing for JOHNY plate in the same county, he will get K1 JOHNY.
Plates like that cost about 240euro and i must say there is very tiny interest in them.
Over last 13 years since they were introduced, ive seen only few belonging to private person.
Some bigger corporations sometimes decide to mark their fleet cars like that. Fe I remember one of the biggest polish radios RMF FM, had their cars with K0 RMF01, K0 RMF02, etc...

Also sometimes people wisely use first two characters to add meaning taking that 0 looks like O. Like you could get G0 AWAY in Gdansk. Or P0 RSCHE in Poznan.

Ive seen one P0 BABCI which literaly means - inherited from grandma.

But Im actually surprised some people pay such horrendous money for number plates in UK, while in Poland you can get nice number for reasonable price, but very few decides to go for it.

I've seen a Bentley with the plate 1H, where did that come from and how much would it be worth?

We'll be the judge of that, tbh. .....

And speaking as a Porsche fanboy and ex-owner. ......if I was to make sweeping statements about oh, I dunno....... Peugeot owners.......at least I'd spell Peugeot correctly.......

I couldn't give a fúck what you think of Peugeot drivers, or VW drivers, or Nissan drivers. I don't buy a Peugeot to make a big brash vulgar statement about who I am, I don't need a car to define me, that is the difference between someone who drives a Peugeot or a VW or a Nissan, and someone who drives a Porche.

    That's lolarious.

I bet if I put you in a room full of people and asked you to point out the Porsche drivers you wouldn't have a f*cking clue.
