    Hi Folks,

Have cash to buy a car now I'm wondering would it be better to wait until January. Will prices change much for second hand cars with the new calendar year? Looking at 08 diesel Passat’s.

    Cheers

Price will probably drop in January but then again its possible that you will get a good deal now as dealers want to shift stock before the end of year.

I'd wait and then scream "sure that thing is half a decade old, I'm doing you a favour buying it" :)

I doubt there will be much difference in price between December and January as dealers want shot of used stock before they get new trade-ins next month. Actually decent clean diesel car prices are holding firm as they are thin on the ground. Have you got any prices now?

    yeah looking at

Volkswagen Passat B6 Comf 1.9tdi 105 2008 90,456 miles € 9,950 cash price no trade in. exfleet car with regular service history and just passed nct this week.

milage is bit high but seems to be the way with most of the passats for sale.

I wouldn't consider that high mileage for a 5 year old diesel car, it's 20k miles a year.

I'd be asking questions about what fleet it was part of though, was it a company car or a rental car?

Its too dear and engine is too low powered. Id be looking to pay 8500 for similar or less miles on an 08 140bhp tdi. The revenue calculator reakons its worth 9500 today, they drop that on the first of Jan probably to 8k. It was 10000 this Jan gone for an 08 as above.

Dont be under any ilusions. If anything prices will go up im afraid.
Nothing to do with dealers, but Irish revenue.

You might get an irish vehicle little bit cheaper if one is willing to move it on, but as for imports i doubt.

Just an example, you can work it out, 2009 520d. vrt Increase of nearly 500 if not more next year.

Bear in mind that the prices of new cars will be rising from January thanks to the VRT changes, this will obviously push up the values of secondhand cars (though somehow I doubt people will be getting more for their trade ins!).
