Help with gas heating

    Hello there,

we have recently moved into a new home and now face the challenge to get used to the gas central heating. I never had gas central heating before and my boyfriend could not be bothered less about it, he only commends on it when the bill arrives. Classic!

well, to get to the point. I have no clue how to use this bloody thing.

We have a Baxi boiler which is responsible for the heating and hot water. I have Horstmann Channel Plus H37XL computer thing on my wall with which I can a set up times that I want the heating to go on or if I want it on constantly. I can not regulate the radiators at all. They are either on or off. I have a thermostat in my sitting room and my bedroom.

so, here's my problem now. Up until now I keept using the boost button and used it 3 or 4 times a day. I was cold during the day needed a blanket and hot water bottle in the afternoon and evening and I used about 3,5m³ of gas a day. Which I think is a lot for being cold. The little wheel on my boiler was set to 50° as I read somewhere that this would be the most economical way to use the boiler.

Right, I have been talking to a friend who has gas geating too and she told me that she has her heating on constant during the day, her house is very warm and she said she only spends about 60€ in winter month on gas. I nearly got a heart attack as I got a bill of 113€ for 6 weeks and I was cold.
So i asked her how she regulates her heating system. Well, her's is not as complicated as mine. She just turns on a switch and that's it. She has a wall thermostat but has never done anything with it. Also she has never turned anything up or down on the boiler.
The only thing she does is regulateing the readiators which she can.

So I have tried this morning to use the heating on constant as well. I set the timer to turn on at 9am and the boiler temperature was set to 50° and the wall thermostat was set to 18°. I got up at 10am and it was 17° warm in the sitting room but took untill 11am to heat up a little more.

So, and now I'm getting confused. Cause I set the wall thermostat to 18° (it's one with a wheel) but my sitting room is now at midday 20° warm! How is that possible????

I have checked also the boiler and the flame goes on every 3 minutes and burns then for about 1 minute and then the flame goes off again. 3 minutes later it goes on and 1 minute later off again. And this keeps going the whole time.
I thought that once the temperature in the room is reached the wall theronstat will send a signal to the boiler and turn it off then and once the temperature drops the boiler goes back on. I have the impression now that the boiler does what it wants and only bothers keeping the heat in the radiators.

I really don't have a clue about this thing.

    Help!!!

You can download Horstmann time clock instructions here,

    http://www.horstmann.co.uk/downloads.php

If you have room stats, cylinder stat, motorized valves/zones valves installed. If and when they reach temperature and do not shut off the gas boiler you have a wiring problem.

You would need to hire a pro. A RGII would be a good start but do ask them can they wire a heating system in full to insure that they can diagnose the problem and solve it or explain to you that it may need to be rewired correctly.

Also get them to service the boiler this way you will get the best value for your money.

the motorised valves could be giving trouble if you have any. pins under the thermostatic rad valves stuck just give a tap. anyway have an annual boiler service which should include checking your heating controls are all working etc. explain this problem to whoever you get in and ask him or her to explain the heating control sequences so you get some understanding of your system. look up the manuals of the heating controls on line

Thanks a million for the answers. I think there is something bigger wrong with the heating as it is a gamble today to get it working at all. I did set the timer to go on in the morning and the motor or auctor did not start. This thing is only 2 weeks old!!! And the issues only apply for the downstairs heating.

I think the thermostat my be broken. Well or as u already said the wireing is not right!

Well, we are renting so we have to get back with everything to the estate agent as the landlord is in australia! Great!

I'll see how I get on but thanks anyways!

50 degrees is very low,ur boiler is possibly getting to temp and knocking off as it should.turn it up to 6o/70 and see if it makes a difference
