I am thinking of getting a pair of these, does any of ye have them and if so what do ye think of them particularly in low light conditions. Any help welcome.

Failing that what would ye recomend as a good low light pair of binos for under a grand

I also have the geovid 8x42 and they are excellent.
I had the older trinovid 7x42 binoculars before that and they were great also so Im sure the ultravid would also be good.
A mate bought the new zeiss conquest 8x42 hd binoculars and is very happy with them so they might be worth a look.
www.optics-trade.eu are selling them for 760 euro.
What price are the leicas you are looking at ?

I have a pair of leica 10x42's and they are truly excellent, really good in bad light, swarovski's are supposed to be every bit as good but seem to be a lot heavier imho.

Going by that last post by rowa it must be the trinovid and not the ultravid
    binoculars that your looking at.
I had the old model trinovids and they were excellent
Great optics and great build quality.
995 euro is a good price.

    The catch:

They are secondhand with small signs of use on the body but the glass looks to be OK. Is a secondhand pair worth €995?

I might just do that as I looked up some reviews and there seems to be sweet fanny all in difference between the 2 except the price

What do ye think of the Kapps range in 8x42 10x42 or 8 x56

I would not really mention this binos in the same thread as Leica. They are OK for sub 400€ binoculars, but they can not be compared with German glass.

The new Zeiss Conquest HD are really nice, especially in this price range where no one else is offering binoculars with the same level of quality at the moment.

In top class however I think that in day time Leica Ultravid have the nicest picture out of all three big names (Zeiss and Swaro) and new Zeiss Victory HT are best in low light.

Leica Trinovid is optically better than Zeiss Conquest HD but it is also far more expensive. There is more than 400€ price difference and this binoculars can not be directly compared.

If you are really interested only in low light performance than go with Minox HG 8x56, Zeiss Conquest 8x50/56 or something similar with 56mm lens in this price range.

I can get the Trinvoid 8x42 at €995 (in an Irish shop)
the Zeiss Conquest 8x42 HD is €760 (internet)
or a Leica Ultravid 8x42 for €935 (Second hand an Irish shop)
The Minox HG 8x56 BR for €1079 (internet But would these be too bulky for stalking?)

My money limit is a grand and I want them for stalking.
I am using Stiner SkyHawk 10x42 at the moment and a fair glass that they are I feel that I am not getting the last shot in the twilight with them.
I do my stalking about 50/50 daytime or lastlight/firstlight.
I am tring to get the best possible all rounder for the budget I have. If the Leica is better then the Zeiss then I will go the extra €235 for the better glass and as it is an Irish seller rather then a non Irish internet shop.

Thanks to you and the other lads for their help and bearing with me as this will be hopefully the last pair I ever need to buy.

Kaps are German - though I will grant you that the glass may not be?

A few times I've been tempted to go for one of the €1k range of binos but I personally just don't see how they're worth so much more than the likes of Kaps.
By the time you're up on the hill and the lenses have gotten a few drops of rain, then even minuscule bits of dust and dirt - the extra €600 doesn't really add much to what you can see in my opinion?

I do however think that some of the cheaper brands are worth avoiding - after sustained viewing through some I get motion sickness.

Where ever the Kaps are made or where their components come from I for one would recommend them. I also see that the've some out with a new model.
PSE Composites can order them in AFAIK.

Kaps riflescopes are Made in Germany, however their binos are not. They are not even assembled in Germany, they just have the Kaps logo on them. And still they are good purchase for less than 400€.

If spending 1000€ or 2000€ on binoculars is worthy or not is a personal choice, however I personally think that there are not many binos under 700€ that are worth buying.

If the leica have better optics than the zeiss Id also pay the 235 extra.
Id also get the 8x42 model as 8x50 and 8x56 binoculars are too heavy and bulky for stalking.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,719 ✭✭✭German pointer

    Job done.

I bought the Leicas today and should have them delivered tomorrow:D:D. Can't wait till they arrive and I have a full weekend of stalking planned so they should get a good test then.

Thanks to all the lads who had an input into this and helping me

You sell binos don't you? What do you recommend for around the €700?

You don't know who makes the Kaps do you - and is any other optics company selling them cheaper under a different brand? I wouldn't mind getting a second pair for the pickup if the price was right. thanks.

For around 700€ I can point out 2 really good products (given the price range).

For stalking, birding, etc. : Zeiss Conquest HD 8x42

For low light use: Docter Nobilem 7x50

I have seen similar products than Kaps binoculars on some fairs but I don't know who else is re-branding them. My general advice what to buy in this price class would be Hawke Frontier ED 8x43.

They arrived today. :D:D First impressions looking out the window is how bright they are compared to the Stiner. As said will give them goood test over the weekend. One minor complaint is I got the glasses and a carry case but only one neck strap between them.

All the leicas seem to come like that.
You just put the strap on the binoculars then when you put them in the case you leave the strap out and carry them with it.

I was out today and thought the new binos were broken as while I could see into shadow and dark corners, there was no deer in the picture;)

All jokes aside, I must say they are everthing I expected and I am not dissapointed with them. A tree line, ranged with the rangefinder at 653 yards away: when I was there last week I could just about see a deer in it but only when directed by the other lad with me, I was using the Stiner 10x42 Sky Hawk.Today with the new Leica's I could nearly count the blades of grass on the other side of the same tree line from the same spot. A fantastic product.

Now if only I could find where the deer are hiding
