I'm looking to upgrade my hard drive before Christmas. I've had a look around and the only place that seems to have suitable ones is amazon. I'm looking for maybe a 500gb one, depending on the price. Anyone know of somewhere else that has them, preferably an irish site like pixmaina, amazon told me it'll be after Christmas before I get it if I order it from them.

    Thanks

Nothing about Pixmania is Irish, other than the domain.

What about third party sellers on Amazon. I got a lovely Samsung 650GB HDD to upgrade the memory of my Gen 1 60GB PS3 and it worked a treat. Cost about €60. Can't remember the exact seller on Amazon though, sorry (edit, it might have been eBay. Either way, no harm in checking it out)

Komplett is usually pretty good for those, 2 day delivery if you can get to their pick-up point (in Dublin 15).

What about Dabs.ie? They are based in the UK so it costs between 6 and 7 euro for delivery but they provide tracking numbers etc and have quick turnaround times. Have used them quite a few times in the past and they have very secure packing.

I actually ordered this hard-drive for my PS3 couple of weeks ago and it only took I think 3 business days for delivery. €60 including delivery.

Actually heres my tracking (the gap for a couple days was due to the weekend!)

We should do a price comparison chart.

    500GB
    640GB
    750GB
    1TB

See what the best online prices are, i saw PC World had a 1TB drive for 95 euro...Hitachi Travelstar i think. Remember the z-height **must** be 9mm....you'll see alot of 2.5 inchers with 9.5mm

Can you not just mod the PS3 hard drive tray to make it fit the new drive? Sure it's only half a centimetre.

I changed over mine last night and actully had real trouble just removing the screws from the old drive. I eventually got them out using a pliers and a hammer and while my tray is not in great shape (and missing two screws!), it could easily fit a bigger hard drive if/when I decide to upgrade again and more importanty it works fine!

I had to cut into the screw then used a flat head, found the blue screw easier than the others.

Um - it worked fine for me.
Slim model, don't think it was tight been in a while now.

Half a cm might not sound like much but it might be the difference of it over heating and breaking before it's time. That extra half a cm might just be enough to stop air flow and dissipate heat.

Having said that, I'm sure my 1TB is 9.5mm

9.5mm is fine. Any bigger and it won't fit.
See note A in this article

If you look at any other PS3 HD upgrade articles you will also see 9.5mm as the maximum size.

I'll have loads of space now, might even invest in a PlayStation plus subscription.

If you are, it may be worth signing up beforehand.

Not only can you add the current crop of free games to your Downloads list, you can also transfer all of your saves to the cloud storage you get. That way, if something goes tits up during the copy and restore to the new HDD, you can still get your save files across.

lads, i just placed an order for this but i may have to cancel, i just noticed the height on this HD. From the sound of your discussion this unit is too big to fit properly, can you confirm?
