Is your tv a Samsung perhaps?

    Is it Saorview approved?

You may have Audio Description (AD) turned on accidentally. This switches to the second audio channel carried on most Saorview channels which, unfortunately, carry no audio! A way to check this is to go to RTE News Now, which has only one audio channel if I recall. If that works, then it's your AD setting.
