Hi myself and my partner are about to have our 1st baby.

We are both on jobseekers and both in receipt of rent supplement. But we live in our own places at the moment but we want to move in together. We have been looking for somewhere to rent for a good while now and have to admit we are finding it impossible to find somewhere to live.

So we have decided to look outside the county we live in. Thing is its a bit difficult to find much either too when the landlords/estate agent when they hear rent allowance.

So now we found something that doesn't accept rent allowance but we reckon we could afford it without the need for rent allowance,it would be a struggle but we reckon we could do it.

Question is are we breaking any rules would we be questioned by the social welfare as to know why we are not getting rent allowance. Thing is we just want a half decent and WARM place to bring the child home too that's all.

    I'm a bit worried

There wont be any problem in your not applying for rent supplement, but feel i should put a few points to you.
You must inform DSP, of course, that you are changing your address and that you are going to be co-habiting.
Are you both on Jobseekers Allowance or Jobseekers Benefit?
If you are both on Jobseekers Allowance and are both getting euro188 per week do you know that when you move in together this will reduce to a family rate of euro312 per week? You can add euro29.80 to that when the baby arrives, plus euro130 Child Benefit per month.
Pretty tough to pay rent and all other bills from that amt.

Thanks for the reply. We are going to inform the DSP that we will be living together,I am on benefit and herself is on allowance.

we also do know that we will be cut.but that's why we are moving somewhere the rent is only gonna be 400 per month.the problem we have is we don't have a deposit to move anywhere in Dublin but we can just scrape the deposit together for the area we want to move into. Also the house we will be renting is like a palace compared to anything else we have looked at.

We do understand it will be tough but its not long till the baby is due and we want to be sorted before xmas so we can get settled.

Also I am starting a Fas course in January and I am hoping that I will find a job after it maybe I am being naive but its a hope

plus neither I nor herself smoke or really drink that much.just think it would be worth the sacrifice

It's also worth while asking in person if they will accept rent allowance. Although the ad might state not, it can be a different story if the LL meets you in person and you can offer good references.
Its worth a shot anyway. Good luck with the baby and your future together :-)

Yes i would mention again the rent supplement to the LL. but often when they state that they dont want any rent allowance applicants, its because they dont want to come to the attention of revenue etc.
best of luck with your new baby and your new life OP. Living on euro342 per week and shelling out euro100 per week in rent alone is a daunting prospect especially in the winter with a new baby, but you seem fairly determined so good luck. let us know how you are getting on.

Thanks to everyone who took the time to post.with the child benefit too it will be a bit easier.
I know its going to be tough but I really don't see any other option unless I can get a job but that's not happenig either but I will give it my best shot just won't be able to drive to Dublin when I want but if we move we are going to move full stop.

Its all a bit mad. But thanks
