This encounter moved me sufficiently to feel the need to share it here.

Yesterday, at the end of Wexford street a man passed on a nightmarish contraption of perverse beauty...an old steel MTB frame, with drops featuring those weird shifters that protrude from the ends of the drops facing backwards, fat slicks and full mudguards.

The MTB frame sill had some eye scarring 1990s style faux graffitti lettering on it to add to the disorienting effect.

Has anyone else encountered this strange beast?

Plenty of steel framed 26" touring bikes with dropped bars and bar end shifters.

Youman might have just DIY'd a tourer for himself and put the less nobbly tyres on it for commuting.

I used to use this setup, not even sure it counts as backwards on the drops.

Nice bike, but are the mudguards for bigger wheels?

Nah, the mudguards are 55mm. It can fit 65mm guards.

    Those tyres are stock 1.5".
    I now have 1.75" on.
I can go up to 2.1" with mudguards.

As they are, mud is never going to get stuck on them too :)
