If I could ever offer any advice to Irish consumers its this; stay away from Meteor. Drops calls all the time, wastes credit or minutes, and customer service is beyond dire. I WAS a customer of theirs for 9 years, and in the last 2 years was immensely frustrating. I also know that the network is not receiving the attention it once did since Eircom took it over, as they continue to try to push emobile...

Go elsewhere and use a proper network!

I could offer opposite advice based on my experience. Great coverage, always had quick and friendly customer service. And they provide very competitive prices.

    I'm with Beekay on this.

All my family, all the wife's family, and most of our friends are on Meteor and we never have a problem. Those not on Meteor are on 3, which is all well and good until you've a problem. The Indian folk don't really seem to understand/care.

If I could offer advice it's always test your network with a free pre pay sim before you join so you can see the coverage quality where you live work and play.

If you are a Meteor Bill Pay customer and out of contract call 1800567085 (Customer Loyality no.) to get changed over to this plan.

As its a 30 day contract, you are not eligable to get an upgrade phone anymore...

I agree with Africa on this. I was on a 30 day sim only plan with meteor but since this summer their coverage went downhill. It was fine for a year that I was with them. The missus is with meteor as well but she is tied to a contract till next year. She is experiencing identical problems - dropped calls, lack of coverage, etc.

Overall, it is a good deal but best check if the coverage is good where you are.

the only positive thing about meteor - is the PRICE.
The rest of the things: coverage, worst 3g signal level even in Dublin (almost no 3g in the rest of the country), dropping calls, absolutely useless customer service (both on phone and in store).
So.. you are getting what you are paying for.

Meh, I was with them for 8 years, only switched to Vodafone because they had the phone I wanted. I've spent the last 2 months trying to get VF's ignorant email customer service to sort out a simple billing issue, they're far worse than anything I ever experienced with Meteor. Haven't found their coverage exceptional either.

This was a good deal but the market has moved on ... you can get 350 mins, unlimited texts and data with Lycamobile for €10, or unlimited mobile call and texts for €10 with 48 Months. Both with no contract.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,002 ✭✭✭68 lost souls

Depending on your usage and the numbers you call the best plan differs, personally this would not be for me as for the same price with 3 I get unlimited weekend calls to any network, free calls to the numbers I usually ring as they are on 3 and unlimited texts and unlimited data. Most of the people I call that dont have the same network have viber or skype where I can call them for free on that.

Sure about that? The table on that page says €19 (or €14 for 250 mins, or €9 for 150...)

I recently left Meteor after about 10 years with two billpay and 5 PAYG accounts. I'd second what was said above about the deterioration across the board; the last 6 months dealing with them were a nightmare.

Now paying €10/month on 48 (with the option of a 30-minute data "snack" for 15c, if I find myself needing it, which is practically never). Early days yet but they were quick to sort any teething problems (porting my 085 number), in fairness.

In fairness, thats simply not true. I have been with Meteor for 5 years and have had a smartphone for the last two years. I live in rural cork and can honestly say I get 3G almost everywhere around the county I'm regularly in. I live in the city during the week and get HSPA+ here.

My honest opinion on meteor though is that they are a good value network. Their coverage isn;t as good as Vodafone or o2, but is certainly more than acceptable. On the data side of things, vodafone have wider 3G coverage but I've noticed that where you do get meteor 3G (or HSDPA), it is definitely quicker than vodafone 3G.

Other than that, I've never had any issue with customer service or with dropping calls.

And another thing, remember, data you get with meteor (or eMobile for that matter), you are allowed tether with, and to the best of my knowledge vodafone and o2 do not allow tethering.

Yeah but Lycamobile have been offering double credit on topups for months now. So you get €20 for a €10 topup. You can buy the €19 bundle (350 mins) or the €14 (250 min) bundle with just a €10 top up. Agree with you about 48 Months, it's a great deal for mobile talk and text.

I remain to be corrected but I dont think lyca or 48 allow tethering. Something I find handy about meteor even if it is only 1gb. Emobile do allow tethering

Maybe but I think theres a workaround. Involves installing some app, turns your phone into a access point I think, don't know exactly .... its been posted on here somewhere.

I would have went for this only that Meteor's coverage wasn't too good where I work, tested with a prepay SIM over the last couple of days. :(

I only moved to O2 for a free phone, now I cant get a signal in parts of the house and customer service is non existant, and I'm paying nearly double for the privilage
Cant wait to get back to Meteor

Disagree with this , The signal is pretty good in Dublin , and I was able to stream a Rugby match on the bus home to Kilkenny with no problems over the 3g network. which I thought was pretty impressive.. It did eat like 400mb of data though :s

Just moved to o2 from emobile and want to go back. O2 3g coverage is abysmal everywhere I go, including leopardstown, gorey, coastline in wexford there' s just simply no coverage at all.wife in meteor has full coverage in all these areas. O2 are a joke, and by god do you pay for it.

Pity the poor suckers with iPhones with O2 , getting fleeced from every angle there! :O

Firstly as a meteor customer for 10 years or so travelling around the country on a weekly basis the above statement is rubbish.

Secondly, working in telecoms for the last few years I have tested and seen results of all operators benchmarked against each other and Meteor don't finish bottom of the pile in any of the main KPIs. They have an extensive 3G rollout.
You may be on the fringe of a congested cell for example and experience such problems but that doesn't represent the network as a whole. This goes for any operator.

I used to think "you get what you pay for" with mobile operators but not anymore... with the exception of 3 anyway.

I've been with Vodafone for the last 5 years, as had most of my family. We've had a lot of problems with coverage and call quality lately. I had poor coverage in my flat in Fairview (which I corrected with a Sure Signal in fairness) but I got a new job in Northwood in Santry recently. The coverage was even worse there. I couldn't get 3G at all and had to stick with GPRS - another thing I hate about Vodafone now, did their EDGE rollout grind to a halt?

My family in Kerry had a lot of problems too. Despite a relatively stable GSM signal their calls were constantly dropping out. They've all moved to Tesco Mobile now. One of my friends down there also moved to Meteor.

I've ported my number over to Tesco Mobile as the O2 network gave me the best coverage in both locations. I'll see how things go. Meteor gave me a good 3G signal in my flat but I was only getting GSM in Northwood, albeit a stable GSM signal. I could tolerate EDGE in work so I won't rule Meteor out if I'm not happy with Tesco.

If say I want this deal for a smartphone I'll be getting at xmas, would there be any way of ordering this plan now and having it activated on the 25th?

No, these are SIM only plans. If you want a new phone you have to go with one of the contract plans. You could, of course, get the phone SIM free and stick with the SIM only plan, but you'd pay a lot more for the phone.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,794 ✭✭✭cookie1977

This plan cannot be used with a disocunted smart phone. It's a sim only plan. If you take the plan now you'd have to buy the phone on payg or sim free to use with the plan

    Sorry I should've clarified, it's SIM free.
