And get rid of Security Essentials if you're using it as Anti-Virus.

Better advice would be don't rely on any anti virus as many will not pick up zero day malware and let it through. Keep Windows and browsers/plugins (Flash, Java, Adobe Reader, Quicktime etc.) up to date and also avoid downloading or installing "dodgy" software.
For freeware firewall the one included in Windows should be fine for most, any more and you are just adding additional bloat with more features, comodo is meant to be decent for a free one though. Another anti virus you could try is avast which is free, but just don't rely on any anti virus to keep you 100% protected

No need for 3rd party firewall software these days.
Only useful back in dial up days.

most antivirus have a built in webscanner don't they? monitors your traffic, and warns you of dodgy sites or malware/viruses trying to get through? i know avast free does anyways, and i've always found it reliable.

If using built-in firewall then read this and spend a bit of time to set it up right. Comodo blocks everything from the get go and then you only allow what you want to get through it.

    Dongle days...

Run an ipconfig command on a pc thats connected using a dongle...You will see a private ip address.
You are behind a NAT firewall already even when using a dongle.

So you reckon theirs no need for one?

There isn't need for one at all....what have you got in your PC that some hacker wants....most likely nothing.
They are too busy trying to take down websites to be worried about your holiday photos or your music.

Test your current configuration on this page
    https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2
    and http://www.grc.com/lt/leaktest.htm

If you have Windows firewall enabled that should be enough.
I've used Sygate Personal Firewall yonks ago and liked it, as I recall it checks both incoming and outgoing traffic.
