What about joining the UK?

What I mean is going back to the punt with our own pictures on our money but having the punt part of the pound? Nothing else changes we stay the same as a republic but our punt is part of the UK currency.

We would have the same UK prices and deals would people want that or be completely opposed?

Would you like to have our currency go back to the punt? 26 votes

Back to the Punt which will be part of the UK pound

Back to the Punt but only as Irish currency on our own

Stay in the Euro as we are

What if they don't want us?

We wouldn't have the same prices, though, if we remained apart politically.
All things considered, I'd rather stick with the Euro. Long-term, it's definitely the better bet.

Only boards.ie could ridicule a topic about rejoining the UK as over-discussed.

I think we should join everything all at once and see how that pans out.

    Unthinkable.

How would I be able to rip off give a favourable exchange rate to visitors with Queen's Head if the currencies were tied?

Prices aren't set by the currency they're set by supply and demand.

No, no we wouldn't. NI doesn't even have the same prices as the rest of the UK

This actually could be an interesting spin on this old (by old I mean F*cking Prehistoric) chestnut.

Are you saying that as a separate state we join the UK in currency alone? So exactly the same as having the euro we just have pounds sterling (not punts) and we do what the Scots and NI do and have pictures of Michael Collins and alike.

That we'd tie ourselves to the Bank of England for interest rates ect rather than the ECB? Would we allow the UK to control our VAT rate?

What a fúcking stupid thread. I say this as an Irish person who is currently working in Britain, so I know what state the shíthole that is Britain is in. I've been banned after starting better threads than this.

Do you think the English would be grateful to learn a little of their and their neighbors history? Can't see that one going down well

    Sorry I didn't understand that.

    Sorry I didn't understand that.

I found the hypothetical situation mildly amusing.

Sitting in a pub in England somewhere describing the Irish Pound notes and persons on the back and their role in our history. :D

You'll have a hard time spending those notes on the mainland though. They won't accept northern notes over in England.

Go to one of those magical places where you stand in line for ages and can swap over notes ;)

To be honest I used to take loads of £1 notes back to England from Scotland - the amount of times you got change from a fiver!

Ah right :) To be honest it wouldn't hurt. The knowledge of the English (English myself) on Irish history is somewhat lacking.

Sounds familiar that. Unfortunately strategic ignorance still has it's roots. Truth may not be flattering to any one but tis better for all.

Why does everyone near the boarder shop in NI for cars, alcohol and general shopping then?
