Hi, I'm just wondering if it's possible to use a pencil to write in exams or are we permitted to use pen only? I know you're allowed to use pencil for the MCQ sheets but I'm not sure if it's allowed for longer questions.

    Thanks!

I'm not sure if there's a definite rule either way, but you're probably better to use pen. By the time your exam script is corrected, the pencil could have been smudged and be difficult to read. If you're sitting an exam in a science/maths subject, depending on the method of the corrector, your script could have been opened several times - e.g. say someone corrects all the Q1s, then all the Q2s, etc. from a big bundle of exam scripts - giving lots of opportunity for smudging as the pages rub against each other.

I know pens smudge. I've never had a pencil smudge though, which is why I was confused someone would give it as a reason to use pens over pencils.

I did six out of seven of my leaving cert exams in pencil. I think its much more preferable, especially when writing essays, or in maths, etc. It looks a lot neater than what you would usually hand up, and its a lot easier for the examiner to read, as there are no messy scribbles all over the place. Only thing I would say is, use a pencil that is HB or darker
