Drive Ireland in 24hrs?

So the idea behind this goes back a few years, remember that show i dare ya? they got a dare to drive Ireland in 24 hours and couldn't, partly cuz they were in a punto, nothing against puntos but it wasn't fast enough.


So it came up again with me and the girlfriend, and a few other friends and i though shur why not give it a go myself, and do it for a charity, and just so to prove it can be done as well, I've a faster car so it might be able for it. So I'm just wondering does anyone have any experience in similar sort of things?

What do you mean by drive Ireland? Drive around the perimeter? It should be easy enough to work out how many KM it is and see how long it would take you based on the speed limits. If you arrive early the guards can arrest you on the spot.

I would think you could do it in much less than 24 hours if properly planned.

1.4 opel astra, and all 32 counties, I'd say it's doable but itl take a decent bit of planning and what not

If Pighead were you he'd leave Co. Louth as your last stop. It's impossible to drive through Dundalk without stopping to take in the magnificent views.

I think it could be done, even in a 1.4.

The motorways would let you touch a fair few counties.

The car is mostly irrelevant. A punto can still do 120km/h, even if it is a bit scary. It would be useful to have a car with a big tank, but still you wouldn't lose that much time refuelling.

Afair, those guys failed because they spent lots of time faffing about, stopping for pints and food, and they got lost more than once.

To just drive through should be fairly straightforward. If you start in Tallaght and drive south on the N81 for 30 minutes, you'll cover 3 counties. Another half an hour and you'll get Carlow & Wexford in there too.

of course its possible theirs only 26 countys in the republic
well easy wouldnt go near the others with a D reg :pac:

on a more serious note yes it can be done, has to planned
i driven to 14 counties one day 4 of which where up north and the rest were south and and east , in the space of 18 hours (probably a day) was work related all unplanned used a sat nav (which made me go the wrong way a few times) include time for stopping for the jacks or something to eat as well as talking to company managers on floor between places id say its well easy to do
was also driving a ford mondeo at the time 1.6l which was cruising along only had to stop for petrol twice haha
also you have to take traffic into consideration

goodluck op if you do it, id say it be worth it just for the adventure, not when your stressed outta your head trying to get to places :pac:

I think the record is around the 32 hours I think. They had to get Gardai escorts threw most of the citys. It was tough they had two fuel stops and that was it.

doh.,.and Roscommon just noticed...but hey its an approximation and it still comes out at only 27hrs

Just passing through the counties is doable if you only have to drive through a corner of one. I could do 3 counties from where I am in 20 minutes. The motor ways would allow you to cover vast distances in little time. Avoiding traffic would be the major thing to consider. Traffic can turn a 15 minute drive into an hour long drive.

To be honest that's all it was originally intended to be, just a bit of adventure, but why not make it interesting??

Well yeah, like I've planned where to go at a rough time, like avoid cities at like 4/5pm and in the mornings, where to stop that isn't majorly out of the way and stuff i guess you could say common sense things if you were travelling anyways

best bring flasks of coffee with you. A few years ago i did the circle tour of ireland in around 18hrs. I went navan to dublin, waterford aross to kilarney up to galway up to letterkenny, over to derry over to belfast down to dublin and back to navan. I only stopped for fuel and managed to get toilets at the petrol station. I was driving a Peugeut 106 1.1liter 3 door at the time. The seat gets uncomfatable after a while and my bum went numb!
