    Minister Simon Coveney:
"Beef - €25 million continued investment in Suckler Beef
While the Suckler cow scheme 2008-2012, has now come to an end, it has been invaluable in improving the quality of animals produced from the Suckler herd over the five year programme. The Minister said “I was anxious to build on this success and accordingly, I have allocated €10 million in 2013, financed from unspent Single Farm Payment Funds for a new support programme for Suckler beef farmers to participate in a new Beef Data Programme. When taken together with residual payments of €10 million under the Suckler Cow Welfare Scheme, this will amount to €20 million in direct payments to Suckler farmers in 2013. This programme will assist farmers in improving the genetic quality of Irish cattle and will maintain the data flow into ICBF in order to build further knowledge and more rapid progress in breeding and ultimately in profitability for farmers”. In addition, the sum of €5 million has been set aside to support the continuation for another year of the Beef Technology Adaptation Programme, a scheme that provides beef farmers with better information and improved skills to increase profitability on farms."

It's a balls, first it was 80e per cow, then 40 per cow. Now we are down to 20e for 20 cows, whats next 10 euro for 10 cows? Simple simon would want to cop on to himself, soon there will be nothing west of the shannon except tourists.

If the seat's wet, sit on yer hat, a cool head is better than a wet ar5e.

Simple Simon has nailed his colours quite clearly in my eyes to the bigger farmers with his CAP stance, small farmers or farmer on poor land are on their own.

just adding insult to injury with the 400euro rubbish payment.
Will anyone say he a good minister for agriculture now....

Am i right in assuming that a farmer will have to take part in this scheme in order to continue in a beef discussion group?

Farmers with stock bulls will also be required to complete a functionality assessment around issues such as mobility and fertility.

    What will this involve?

yes you will, new scheme also has to record cow milk yield, and as someone else pointed out Stock Bull details

Basically more work for less money, how does that work

If you are in current SCWS then you automatically get a application form sent to you in Jan,

wonder will the new scheme actually pay for twins unlike the old one which only paid for one calf

Yeah, that was strange in the old scheme. You got paid per cow, not per calf. But then most of the requirements are relaed to the calf. So it didnt make much sense.

Then again, you are being paid for producing a better quality weanling and they did pay out on stillborn calves. That didnt make much sense to me either.

Latest on this new beef data scheme Irish Examiner

    http://www.irishexaminer.com/farming/beef/20-per-suckler-in-new-beef-data-programme-218399.html

"If we have moneys left over after that, then we will give it to the farmers who have more than 20 cows. I believe there will be some money left over to give top-up payments to farmers with 30 to 40 suckler cows," said Agriculture Minister Simon Coveney.

"20 yoyo per CALF, if it is still born, or has bvd or dies before weaning what is the story? Slightly better than 400yoyo, thanks simon, but if this fcukin weather keeps up you'll find it very easy to pay it next year because there will be fcuk all suckler cows left in the country.

I wonder if you offered staff in the Department Of Agrculture €20 per annum, to do extra work, what would the reaction be?

I wonder about the begrudgery about this scheme. The SCWS ran its 5 year course and achieved its objective - training us to wean our weanlings correctly. Probably would have continued but for the major economic down turn. Despite that Coveney has managed to squeeze a few bob out of his cabinet colleagues and the department of finance for this scheme and the discussion groups. Both add value on a national level and generally are of more interest to the smaller farmer.
