I have a Citroen c5 recently I noticed that it will lose power for a second (almost as if it lost grip and then got grip), this has happened 5 times in the last 2 days. Varied at different speeds and gears from 1500rpm to 3000rpm

    - 80000miles
    - Drives on country roads and then dual carriage way approx. 70 mph for 40 minutes every day.
    - Only have it a month and it has partial service history
    - Engine has got rougher, when idle
    - I think I will need to have Timing Belt and Water Pump replaced.
    - I’m sending it to a garage next week but I would like you views on what it might be and or common issue with the c5.

It won't be the tb causing this, its sounds like a fuel issue possibly even something as simple as a fuel filter you ll need to get it plugged in to get an idea what area the fault is in.

I bought a c5 hdi with a "full" Citroen service history with 90km.

The air filter was never changed.....the fuel filter was manky.

Get the fuel filter changed for a start and be careful changing it if doing it yourself....easy to crack the plastic housing.

This sounds a bit like the clutch is slippping. Do the revs shoot up when it looses power?

Id actually say in all fairness that it is quite possibilly your egr valve. I would say its covered in carbon.

    +1.

Symptoms would include hesitstion around the 2000rpm mark as the egr valve is blocking the exhaust flow when its sticking

+2 sounds like egr valve sticking open when it should be closing under acceleration....Most of the time this fault will not log any faults but to rule out other potential problems a diagnostic check would be recommended..:)

    Car went to Citroen.
They viewed computer and said egr valve was fine, nothing unusual with engine.
    They replaced
    -Fuel Filter
    -Air Filter
    -Oil filter
    -Full service carried out

Said that engine cooling fan needs to be replaced. Approx €350 for part

Driving for a few weeks and the same issue re-occurs
Bring to my local mechanic who tested over a few days
He cleaned egr valve but said it was broke (sticking/jamming half way)
Replaced egr valve, everything fine for the last 5 weeks. Now engine management light is back on and car make noise for up to 10 minutes when shut down (fan going in background) clicking noise from under the Citroen HDI cover in middle of engine.
Engine still loses power/but only when engine management light is on (goes off sometimes)

Any idea if this is normal for a fan to do this?
What else could be problem causing engine management light?
Am I looking at a new engine? Or what’s my mechanic likely to do (he’s busy at the moment, so I’m trying to look at possible causes)

Video of engine and noise here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wJjJ1x68zuk (fan working as you can see, clicking noise from under Citroen cover.

Sounds like your mass airflow filter needs replacing.

Sounds like your mass airflow filter needs replacing.

Do you mean Mass airflow meter...?

@Op....The clicking noise could be coming from the throttle body or as citroen call it "air doser"..there are two motorised buttlerfly flaps that open/close when you start the engine and when it shuts down...the second one bypasses the intercooler when the dpf is going tru a regeneration.

The fact that the cooling fan is running on most of the time makes me think that the dpf is blocking and its defaulting into regeneration mode as a safety precaution.
Get it hooked up to some decent diagnostic equipment where you can read faults..live data etc...;)
