Agreed, will still be maintained for athletics as I understand it, including worlds 2017. Spurs proposal was to never allow it be used for athletics again. Can never understand why these stadiums are designed as such for a 2 week event and then require major modification - can't both be planned at the same time?

There is a long way to go before United make the move.

    more details on the guardian
[West Ham] were named the highest-ranked bidder for the £429m venue....
The LLDC wants West Ham to improve on their £15m contribution to the £160m-plus conversion budget required to install retractable seats and a full roof.

The Olympics Committee didn't want to say beforehand "this stadium will cost 400 million to build, and then we're giving it to a football club" and if they had done there'd have been pressure to have the club pay more of the construction costs, which no club would sign up to. The clubs knew that after the Olympics they'd need to find a new tenant or be left with huge maintenance costs for an empty stadium.

The Olympics were great, but the costs involved were just stupid. The bid committee lowballed and lied at every stage of the process because they knew that afterwards there would be no real accounting and no blame attached.
