Just got a message from halpenny golf saying there having a loyalty club night and that if you turn up you'll get staff prices on all stock. Anyone been to one of these nights before and got any good deals?

Got the same text myself. Pity it can't be applied to online sales....living in Clare so no good to me...

What kind of discounts do they give on these nights? 15-20%?

I wanted to avail of this offer tonight to invest in a new driver. Perhaps a 910 or even the 913 but I wanted to hit a few of them and see what one suited me best before spending that amount of money.

They told me that they cant facilitate fitting tonight. I can't pay for the driver tonight and then go over tomorrow and get fitted either.

So I want to spend the guts of €300 there tonight but they expect me to pick a driver off the shelf and go pay for it without ever hitting it.

    Thanks but no thanks.

That is just plain ridiculous on their behalf. I understand the fact that they cannot do fittings tonight on the basis that the shop will be busy, but if you are shelling out tonight they should surely show the flexibility of allowing you to test them over the weekend and decide which one you want.

I dropped in on the way home there and asked on a couple of things I am looking to buy. They could not tell me if they were in the sale or what price they would be in an hour...they get a special email 15 minutes beforehand allegedly. I don't know whether this is true or whether they are trying to get as many people in there as possible to help create a buying inertia.

I know what you mean, if I was buying the new 913 I'd want to be fitted or at least try it first as well but is there anywhere else close by to try it so you know your specifications ?

Can the new driver be changed by yourself after you bought it? can you change the loft and angle yourself ?

It seems they think they will be very busy tonight but if you really wanted to take advantage of the discount you could make it work for you by trying it somewhere else ?

The guy wasn't able to tell me the prices on the phone either for some reason.
Nor could he tell me what percentage "staff discount" was which I found strange.

Imagine buying a 913 without ever striking a ball with. Madness if you ask me.

"Not knowing" the staff discount is an absolute joke, as a member of staff, you would be well aware of what discounts you get for each make, model, range. They may differ quite a bit but they still should be able to give you the %'s for main brands.

The whole sale is a "staff discount sale" supposedly, so waiting to hear the prices 15 mins before the sale is a bit of a joke.

A sales gimic really. I've been to one and you can expect 20% discount. Have to be honest the guys in the Drogheda shop always give me a decent discount on anything I've bought.

Just back from the Lucan branch. There must have been about 30-40 people in there, with a lot of stuff being purchased. There were three staff, one of which was on the till. There were no prices on any items and you had to ask the staff for individual prices on each item (if you could find one of the other two, who were literally up to their ball$). There seemed to be a lot of 'standing around' by many people waiting to speak to someone to get a price.

I picked up a Mizuno Windlite jacket for just under €64, which is far cheaper than anything online. Some stuff had no discounts if they were already reduced, and other stuff had the same discount that you would get any day of the week for 'cash'. There seemed to be about 20% off a lot of stuff based on overhearing conversations in the queue. I was looking to get a wedge and possibly a driver but it was just too much hassle waiting around like a spare wheel to get a member of staff so I just left.

In fairness, I expect they run nights like this to encourage people who know what they want to buy now rather than keep putting it off. This type of flash sale relies on footfall rather than sterling service.

With the estimated number of people in the shop, allowing customers try clubs could lead to chaos. There could be queues for trials, people unhappy they didn't get enough goes or that others got too many. More employees would be needed to organise the trials and talk customers through their choices.

If I wanted something, I would have gone down found out how much it was and come back when they could fit or let me try it. If they couldn't match tonight's offer I would tell them I would go somewhere that would match that offer. You'd be amazed how quickly this will change their tune.

If you have written proof or solid evidence (website etc.) of another shop's offer I've found nearly all other golf shops will match or beat this price.

The "staff discount" tagline is simply a marketing ploy to get people talking and thinking about the event. The more people think or discuss: "is this really staff discount?", the further the message gets round and the more we unconsciously think about the event and product we want.

Have to say if you know what you want then these nights are great. i've been to a couple and have always found the discounts great. If i was going to buy a club i would have gone at some other time to try it out not on a really busy night.

They don't entertain you for a fitting unless you are buying the club that day there and then.

I wouldn't be the type to go over, take up an hour of their time lying saying I was going to purchase then only to find out exactly what suits, walk out the door and wait for a night like this.

It's bad form to do that IMO.

Have to say I think Mike12 is spot on here. Normally call in and out of the shops when passing and keep an eye on a few prices and then pop in to buy on the loyalty nights if something I'm looking for.

    Really???

Is there a particular time for it?
Can you really just walk it get a spec on a driver for yourself then just go and buy it elsewhere? Why do they provide this service?

100% of short putts never go in.
If you don't get them into the store then they'll never buy anything.

A free service (fitting) is like putting past the hole.
You've got the distance (customer in store) but may not have the right line (someone purchases somthing).

Retailers are happy as long as they've hit it past the hole and given themselves a chance of a sale.

They charge 40 or 50 Euro for a fitting and just deduct it from the cost if you choose to buy. That's standard for fittings.

Ok well that makes more sense to me.

i bought a driver there a few months ago and was told i had to book for a fitting, was lunchtime on a Tuesday and the shop was empty.
i was eventually allowed to hit a few balls into the net with some impact tape, but all on my own.
    wasn't too impressed.

That's really not worth a crap is it!!
I'd be expecting the launch monitor and all the trimmings. Hit a few different drivers and compare which one is the best for you.

I did that in American Golf couple of years ago and it was great to see the difference. I think I'll just go back to AG instead of halpenny.

In fairness part of the reason for them requiring a booking is to ensure they have a pro or somebody trained to use the launch monitor available. Might have been the case here.

The guy who gave me the impact tape started a fitting session with another customer as I was leaving...

I knew what driver I wanted I was just undecided between a 9 and a 10.5 degree (as I was replacing a 9.5 degree) and also wanted to confirm the stiff shaft was correct.

I dont think it would have killed them to let me spend 15 mins comparing the results of the 3/4 options I wanted to test...

But if he had started a fitting with you and u decided to stay an hour the guy who had booked would be pissed off.

He could have just said "I can only give you 15 minutes as there is someone else booked in" and I would have been happy, saying a flat no and then standing around watching me hit balls for 15 mins is not what I would call top quality customer service.
