If you mentioned what limits apply to your car, it would be easier to judge how far above the limits are you.

Car failed NCT smoke test today. 2005 Saab 9-3 1.9tid 160k km

    Smoke 3.75/m
    Engine/Oil Temperature 102 Degrees

    Limit 3.00/m (Turbo)

Any advice please? Maybe try small things first like cleaning the EGR valve. Car is due an oil & filter change, will do it on Saturday. Surely this wouldn't make much of a difference though? Maybe change the fuel filter too? Add some Dipetane?

It's not burning any oil at all. Engine was plenty hot enough for test too.
