    Hi all.

Just a quick query. I am planning on having an attic conversion done in the new year with the Velux Roof Terrace system.

Is there any reason structurally why the terrace can't be extended accross the entire width of the roof. The vertical supports will come down at 1m high and this will leave a 4 - 5 foot behind the support and the wall plate, the roof is 6m wide so would end up would end up with a 6m rather than 1.8 m terrace.

    Thanks

Engage a structural engineer, most things are possible but not always financially feasible.

It would also be advisable to address any potential planning issues before you start.

Thanks, I indeed plan to have an it designed structurally but at the moment we are still considering the plans and trying to get an idea of cost as we have a very definite idea of what we want.

Planning wise we already had an informal chat with the planner as we know him, we will be going for an official pre planning meeting soon, property is not overlooked or overlooking anyone on any sides and closest boundry is excess of 100m. All alterations will be to the rear also and not visable to anyone so not hugely worried about planning at this stage.

Trying to get an idea of fesability of extending the terrace at this stage as we have already decided on the Velux roof terrace system and its seems a waste not to extend it across the full width.

the issues you need to think about are mainly weatherproofing...

if you use the system you are creating a flat roof section, so can it be drained effectively and will it have access to a storm sewer?

also, you are creating two external walls which also need to be weatherproofed. If these are the party walls, you need to ensure moisture doesn't penetrate adjoining buildings.

as regards the internal structural work, we cannot discuss that here.
