i finally got myself a nice GWP pup dog from an excellent bloodline , high hope in him. I know that good papers etc .. doesn't make him a world class gun dog but it can't hurt him either !

Anyway , at what age do you usually start working them ? Obviously this season is gone as he is only 1 month old but what about next November ?
Any of you could recommend a good DVD and books on training gun dogs ?
Any particular book on GWP out there ?

    Many thanks
    ah sure !

He is only 1 month old? I thought pups would only be sold from 9-12 weeks on.

I would let him be a pup until he is 6 months. Until that time get him used to his name and get him coming back to you. Then from 6 months work on everything else.

When you start working them depends on the pup. Could be a quick learner or could be a nervous pup that might take longer. If you use next season as a guideline you should have him ready but don't rush things either.

only 4 weeks yes but will bring him home at the end of January only :) , as you said he is too young to leave is Mum
will get Bryantscroft Hunt Point Retrieve Training Series , that should be a good start .

I have gwp, I love them. They are late developers I think in comparison to others and it is very important to go slow with them as they are very sensitive and very intelligent. Start by dicipline/obidience (basics)then on whistle. You will find they will naturally point early (4-6mnths). Be very carefull about introducing gun, that important. Then get them out. The quartering and steadyness will come in time.
Just enjoy him as a pup and dont push him too hard as they are only pups (till 2-3yrs I think).
Also, When they are young let them hunt out far as they want, it is easier to bring them back and to get them out. I'd highly recommend Derry Argue, I have his dvd, it is only short but very simple. Follow that and you wont go wrong. Post picture if you can, what colour and line?
Are using for stalking or game?

    Thanks Corcoo2000.
i will be using him for rough shooting and stalking. can't wait to bring him home !
I am also a late developer , still behave like a 15 years old even though i am way past that so we should get on well :)
Will post a pic when i have him . Trudvang for dad and Vom Liether-moor for Mum would be the main blood line.

best of luck with your gwp pup. I have one too. A bitch out of excellent bloodlines. Didn't start any training until 6 months. I used the bryanscroft / Rory major series and it's very good.
Very intelligent, sensitive, develop slowly as the other lads have said. They are real couch potatoes and chill out when they have been in the field for a few hours.

Lads whiles I'd agree let the dog be pup I would be cautious of advising others to let them be without some clarification.
Basic manners, recall, name, whistle, light fetching & some pointing encouragement can & IMO should be done from 3 months onwards. This isnt hardcore training but is basic foundation setting.
I also bring dogs into the field on Light runs & socialize with other dogs early too.
Have always done my dogs like this & have had good results.

I have a 13mt old bitch and shes coming along grand so far, but they are hard work and really try your patience, but if u can keep ur head when things are going wrong and just abandon the lesson for something else you,ll be grand, i,ve heard from others that they take at least 2 seasons before they really come into themselves and i believe this to be true, i use a book called the roughshooters dog by michael brander, its an old book but fairly simple in the methods used, u can get it online cheap:) best of luck with ur pup;)

i have a gwp bitch about 18 months old now ,slow and steady is the way with them ,
she is still puppyish but coming along grand ,start at about 3-4 months with play training i.e . getting her to come to her name ,bringing a tennis ball back to you etc .and dont rush anything with them ,deadly dogs intelligent but sensitive so wouldnt respond well to any type of harsh treatment ...gently does it ;);)
