speedometer doesn't work for first 5 miles

hi, I recently has someone look at my speedometer as it had been cutting out while I was driving. Now it doesn't seem to be cutting out mid-journey, but it only starts working 5 or 6 miles after the car is in motion. Its a Peugeot 406 hdi, 110 bhp. Anyone have any ideas? cheers

Is it a new issue since it started getting cold?
Either way it sounds like either the wiring or the sensor.
I'd start by checking the earth, then the rest of the wiring and lastly replace the sensor itself.
