Just booked a car 'opel corsa or similar' for a week over christmas in france. I booked through rentalcars.com for €251. Picking the car up from Hertz. If i got it threw Hertz directly it would cost €435.

What are my chances of getting a corsa? What else would they give me instead? Any chance of getting a bigger car instead?

Never rented a car before so not sure how it works. Cost was a huge factor in going with the corsa a golf would be twice the price. This is for 5 adults so the bigger the better.

I think you've been a bit ambitious going for the Corsa...you should be able to upgrade easily once there, but at a price.

In fact, I'd say you're mental. There will be barely any luggage space in that class of car. You're talking Corsa, Fiesta size here.

Yeah I know but it was cheap. Most of the holiday will be spent drunk in the snow. We'll only really using it to get to and from the airport (50km) and to the shops and back.

Just wondering about others who have experienced receiving different cars from rental companys other than what they were expecting.

Using a broker seriously reduces the chances of them giving you a free upgrade (I can't remember when I last got my booked class of car with Hertz but I've always gone direct) but they will basically always try to upsell you for a lower rate than the website when you get there. Unless its extremely busy, clearly.

So no chance of receiving a Subaru Forester then :D

Its economy class so shouldn't be too small. Although a slightly larger korean car in its place would be very much appreciated.

Christmas tends to be a peak holiday time, I think you'll struggle to get any sort of upgrade.

With it being Hertz I'd say it's more likely to be a Fiesta - the Irish franchise for Hertz is owned by a Ford dealer.

You could be lucky when you get to the desk. They may have run out of Economy cars and will then have to upgrade you for free.

Being France it will probably be a Clio, 207 or C3. If your lucky and they are fully booked you might get an upgrade.

I'm just back from a week in England. I've rented I don't know how many cars over the last 7 years, always go for the smallest bracket and if I get a small car its always the newest Fiesta but thats rarely. Usually I get a Focus/Golf and once an Astra and a Megane. Like last week I booked a "Corsa or similar" and got an '11 reg 1.6 diesel Focus. I asked why I get bigger cars one time and was told that because I always land at night the smaller cars are gone by then!

the last time I got a car off Hertz was at Dublin airport on a quiet April weekend this year when they had no lack of cars.
I was offered an upgrade for something like a tenner a day extra to get a Quasuai rather than the clio I had booked.
I'd have to say that it being christmas the'll probably be well busy so a paid upgrade for cheap is probably a more realistic hope.

I've been bumped up a few times with Enterprise from Astra to Insignia during busy periods for a small extra daily charge as they wanted rid of the larger executive cars that business travellers would tend towards(but not hire during holiday times!) in order to keep Astra type cars in stock that are relatively more popular during holiday season.
I presume thats the reason. Either that or they felt sorry for me driving from Cork to Cavan to Belfast and back with the wife and 2 kids and thought I'd get better use off an upgrade than some langer who would barely be driving the length of cork city and wouldnt need a proper motor!
