You will need to get it scanned and exhaust analysis by somebody competent to get it sorted. Too many possibilities to answer without seeing analysis.

Stick up all the results for the emmisions section. Lambda, CO etc.

    exhaust emissions

    low idle above 0.50 fail
    790 rpm co 0.53 vol %

high idle Lambda 1.01 not between 0.97 and1.03
    3.030 rpm co 0.64 vol% above 30%
    HC 73PPM above 200 ppm

also got a diagnostic test done and was told p0420 catalyst system efficency below threshold (bank 1 )

i have not a clue what the above means sorry gang just not a engine mechanic type

    thanks again

From the figures and the fault code you posted overall it looks like you need a new catalytic converter.

My son buys from this crowd in the UK, don't know what their postage rates are like to here - http://www.mx5parts.co.uk/mk225-19982005-c-72_74.html

Mk2 cats look expensive but they do cheaper aftermarket ones.

Not a bad price, if the cat is the problem.

Stop eating beans and retake the test.

really does look like a cat issue and I hate diagnosing emissions faults without having the car infront of me

As said, it looks like a cat will solve the emission issues in the short term at least but you would want to have the cause of the cat failure diagnosed. Things like poor combustion/misfires/plug spec/lambda issues amongst others are the common reasons for cat failure.

The lamda seems to be bang on it the test results and the hcs are not high so possibly an old issue that damaged the cat
