I suppose your pin should arrive in the post soon. I don't think there is any way to get it beforehand, but I might be wrong.

I thought you could only tax your car 3 days prior to the expiry date

I vaguely remember people here taxing their car last year after the 2011 budget increases were announced but before the motor tax website was updated

My renewal letter with pin usually arrives about 20 days prior to renewal date.

you can tax your car online now OP. Go to www.motortax.ie and where it asks for reg and pin number, click the pin retrieval. Fill in the details and your pin will be emailed to you in minutes.

So just to be sure.. you can definitely do the tax once it's due in 3 months?

If you are relating to what I said - I was just asking, not saying anything.

Sure you could try it ?

Nope, only from the month it expires in afaik.

Not sure how early you can tax it as I haven't met anyone willing to tax their car that early before ;D

My guess would be you can tax it in the month it expires or the month prior to that. So if your car expires end of Dec, at a best guess I'd say it could be done from Nov.

EDIT: meant to say my reason for that guess is solely down to thinking I read it on the tax form or website somewhere, been a long while since I last had to fill out a form so not too sure. Think it said you can tax your vehicle prior to or during the month it's due to expire.

Any increase in car tax probably will not come into effect until Jan 1st 2013...maybe??

Thanks for the tip - just taxed mine for 12 months for €160

Two fingers to you Mr. Noonan

    Renewing your motor tax

You can renew your motor tax up to 1 month before your tax is due to expire.

Don't drive but a friend does. Tax isn't due til February though and she's not at a PC. I mentioned the three months thing and she said she's not sure how accurate that is, so I just thought I'd ask here to confirm. :)

It cann't be taxed 3 months in advance.

Did it myself too, €1,390 for the year, deep breaths, deep breaths.

    €210m tax take shortfall

After taxing mine now for €592 - be interesting to see how much, if any, I'll have saved.

Revenue must be chuffed with all the last minute money coming in from motor tax. It's a bit like the queues at filling stations on budget day.

True.....but think of it like this.

I just decided to bite the bullet and lump €660 on to the credit card.

The way I look at it, I would have ended up doing the next year in quarterly installments, which will probably be in or around €215 per 3 months (for a 2.0 - and that's assuming a 15% increase). That would have come to 'roughly' €860.

    A saving of about €200!

Coke and hookers for me this xmas baby! :p
