Taxing car with old owner on logbook

Just bought a second hand car today, out of tax. Garage man gave me the log book instead of sending it to Shannon himself so that I could tax the car myself tomorrow, in my name, in the tax office, anyone ever do this before?

Just don't want to waste the morning only to be shot down at the counter when I go to pay.

If it's the old style Brown Log book then this is possible (change of ownership, then tax the car, all within a few minutes)....if it's the newer type Registration Certificate then no, the change of ownership must first take place in Shannon before you can tax the car. i.e. the car must be in your name in order for you to tax it.

ps. having said that, this is Ireland so it may just depend on who you meet at the counter in your local motor tax office

Don't they look for your insurance cert in the Motor Tax office also?

You dont need a registration cert to tax a car do you? Well I never do. Go tax office, fill in the form, put in your insurance details and they will do it no problem.

A car is not taxed in someones name, just the car itself is taxed.

The motor tax office will process change of ownership only if you are taxing the car at the same time.

This is exactly what you are trying to do. Download the form (RF100 ???), fill it out, bring in form, cash, insurance details, and the log book as completed by yourself and seller. Shouldn't be a problem.

This works for the present style log books.

Only the registered owner can tax the car, and must sign the form. In that sense the car is taxed "in someone's name" but the tax is "tied" to the car, not the person.

Lucky I am never asked. I tax about 5 different cars, some in my name some not, some with my insurance on them some not and it has never once been mentioned to me.

Although if you can change ownership and tax at once its all good anyway.

If the car is just out of tax at the end of November then they will take your money. If not then you'll either have to:
    a) Get the change of ownership done, then tax it from start of December when the VLC is posted back out to you.
    b) Sign a RF100A declaration to say the car is off the road till first day of December, then tax the car with this form filled out, they will just accept this form
    c) Tax the car from when it was last out of date (waste of money if its any longer than November

Only a) is correct but the other two will work.

You don't have to wait for the VLC to come back in your name. As lifer_sean posted above, if you bring in the VLC with the change of ownership section fully completed and signed then you can tax the car straight away. Instead of posting the VLC to Shannon the person behind the counter in the motor tax office retains it, the change of ownership is processed and a new VLC is sent out to you from Shannon as normal.

Thanks lads. Hoping to get it done tomorrow in case the new rates come in at midnight.

Car was taxed up until end of November so *should* be straightforward enough by the looks of things.
