Hi all, I have done a lot of searching through the threads here. I am looking to find out where is the best place in Dublin to shop with a max budget of 1200. If really needed I could raise the budget to 1500. My girlfriend will not care about the price and I know that, but I just want to know the shops that will be best to look in with that kind of budget.

Take an afternoon and go to henry st and try fields. ask them what they have for that budget. Ive always found the willing to knock 10-15% off by simply asking. Take note of the metal/jewels and quality. then head down to davey conway on liffey st. ask him same thing. youll get something very decent for that price.

Forget hight-street jewellers entirely. Diamonds are as good as worthless second-hand. Their value is entirely artificial as they're far from rare in nature.

Take a look at some antique stuff on eBay and / or in small antique stores outside of the likes of the Powerscourt Centre. I got my other half a 20's art-deco ring on eBay for pretty much what the jeweller referred to as "band price": the retail value of the gold in the ring. It's a little unusual in that the central stone is a pearl with two smallish diamonds either side but she loves it and the jeweller who re-sized it for us in the Powerscourt Centre told us we'd have paid 6-9 times what we did had we gone to one of the antiques places there.

Have look at Bluenile.com or Jamesallen.com. Remember to account for taxes and charges though.

Check out some of the auction houses that specialise in jewellery. There are often great deals to be had, especially if pieces don't make the reserve price.

Is €1500 a "low budget" ring???
My wife's cost less than that, but it was the one she choose.

I picked my ring from http://www.jewelsforme.com/ and it was <$500. You could propose with a dummy ring and then let her pick her own one? I think anything over €500 is not low budget ;)
