First of all, sorry if wrong section but I see this only jobs related.

Anyway, i work in my college (I am student but I work in same college), I get paid, in start of year I was paid full sum.

But then it started to cut in half. So instead of say 80 euro I got only 40. Which was annoying, first I blamed college but then they wrote to me:

"[FONT=Times New Roman,serif][FONT=Calibri,sans-serif]I am processing all timesheets that I receive for you. Are the hours matching up on your payslips? Perhaps you are on emergency tax, if you give me your p45 I can apply for tax credits for you. If you do not have a p45 you must contact Revenue yourself. Their number is 1860333425, and NCI tax no is [XXXXXXXX - mod edited out the real number]. Tell them you want to get new tax credits for your new job."

I don't get it. I never had this p45 thing. What is that? Will I get a refund or what?

I would get on to Revenue and ask for a Tax Cert (Form 12A). You should be able to work out your credits from that. If you're entitled to a refund, then they won't process it until the NY (i.e. new financial year).

Well so far I'd say I been deducted about 100 euro (not much, but for me as student it's quite a lot)

That's why you need an up-to-date tax cert. It's down to you to check the correct amount of tax & PRSI is deducted. Are you also liable for USC?

This really should be taught in school. Try the source.

That's why I gave up answering the OP in the end. The college have informed him, I've tried to help and still they won't read up about anything.

He's had two excellent sources pointed out. Now he needs to grow up a little and take responsibility for himself. If they're old enough to drive, then they're old enough to read up and understand how tax works.

Agree with the others here. You need to look up and understand what your tax implications are as you'll deal with it forever.
Just because you're 19 and live with your parents does not mean you won't have to pay USC. It's based on how much you earn.
Have you never had a job previously to this that paid via payslips and not cash in hand?
Get on to the tax office like the college told you and ask to get a tax cert issued for you as you're on emergency tax.
Yes you will get the overpaid amount of tax back but not the full amount that was taken from you as you would still (probably) be liable to pay some tax amount.
Seriously though you're an adult and need to get your head around this and understand all the different personal rates of tax for a PAYE worker & the USC.

You cannot go to the tax office to get a P45. That can **only** come from your previous employer. Trust me, I had an extremely lazy past employer and no amount of asking the tax office can get them to give you a P45.

A P45 is only useful to you anyway if you had another employer in 2012. If you worked somewhere else this year, get on to the previous employer for a P45 and give it to the college.

If you didn't work anywhere else this year, forget about getting a P45 as it will be useless to you. If this was your only job in 2012, this is what you need to do:
    • Call that Revenue number that your employer gave you.
    • Tell them you want to register your new job.
    • Give them NCI's tax number (XXXXX - get it from the email) as you were given in the email.
    • If you have no other job at the moment, ask that all your tax credits are assigned to NCI.
    • NCI will get a letter in a few weeks to tell them what tax to charge you.
    • If you're lucky, they may refund you the extra tax you paid in a subsequent wage packet.
    • Otherwise, ring Revenue in the New Year and ask for a P21 for 2012.
    • You'll then get a cheque in the post (or a payment to your bank account) in about two weeks if you're owed anything.
    • Finally, like others have said, read up on how tax works in Ireland. It's not that difficult to figure out (I'm not in the least bit mathematically minded) and you need to know this for the rest of your life.

OP, you need to cop on.

You were told to get a Form 12A, not a P45.

    It's good advice, follow it.
